1. If the sum of mean and variance of a binomial distribution is 3 and variance is 3/2. Find the
probability of obtaining at least 4 successes.
2. Fit a binomial distribution to the following frequency distribution

3. If 10% of rivets produced by a machine are defective, find the probability that out of 5 rivets chosen
at random (i) none will be defective (ii) one will be defective (iii) at least two will be defective.
4. The probability that a bomb dropped from a plane will strike the target is 1/5. If six bombs are
dropped. Find the probability that (i) exactly one will strike the target (ii) at least two will strike the
target.
5. The mean and variance of a binomial distribution are 3 and 2 respectively. Find the probability that
the variate takes values (i) less than or equal to 2 (ii) greater than or equal to 7.
6. In a binomial distribution with 6 independent trials, the probability of 3 and 4 successes is found to be
0.2457 and .00819 respectively. Find the parameters and of the binomial distribution.
7. Assume that half the population is vegetarian so that the chance of an individual being a vegetarian is
½. Assuming that 100 investigators each take sample of 10 individuals to see whether they are
vegetarians, how many investigators would you expects to report three people or less were vegetarian.
8. Assume that on the average one telephone number out of 15 called between 2pm and 3pm on week
days is busy. What is the probability that if 6 randomly selected telephone numbers are called (i) not
more than three (ii) at least three of them will be busy?
9. A certain screw making machine produces on average 2 defective screws out of 100, and packs them
in boxes of 500. Find the probability that a box contains 15 defective screws.
10. Fit a passion distribution to the following data given the number of yeast cells per square of 400
squares.
