Jesus’ Healing Methods – Michael Saxbury

Jesus’ methods of healing prayer consisted of at least one and sometimes a combination of the following, as
indicated by the verses farther down:

1.  Touch, usually the hand or part that needed healing – 15 times out of 33
2.  An action to be obeyed – used 20 times out of 33
3.  A command to be healed – used 3 times out of 33
4.  A statement that healing has occured – used 5 times out of 33

A few points I noticed about Jesus’ healings:

- Jesus was performing the healing in God’s name, empowered by the Holy Spirit and one with the father.
Therefore, He did not have to say “In my name” or “In God’s Name.

We are now as Jesus was (1 John 4:17 ), one with the Father by the spirit (1 Cor. 6:17) and the temple
of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19).

I don’t know why the disciples said “In Jesus name” in Acts, or why Paul and Peter did not say “in Jesus
name” in the epistles.

- Interestingly enough, in Mark 9:38-39 an unsaved person was going around casting out demons in the name
of Jesus and Jesus did not know it, and did not condemn this activity.

In Matthew 7:22, Jesus also indicates that His name has so much power, that even people whom He never
knew, WILL (not might or maybe) perform miracles, cast out devils, and prophesy using His name.

In Luke 10:17, the 72 disciples came back reporting that even the demons obey them when they used His
name.  Using the phrase “In Jesus name” in conjunction with healing is demonstrated broadly enough that I
incorporate it.

(click read more below if you are reading this from our homepage)

- Jesus boldly and authoritatively referred to himself a lot in these healings using (“I”) as did the disciples. It
was not because Jesus was operating in His divinity or in His own power of the human self.

It was because as Acts 10:38 said, God was with Him.

God was also in them and they were in Him, one with Him, so “I” was appropriately describing them
ALL, the combination of the new creation, Jesus in us.

- Samuel was told something similar when he was anointed in 1 Samuel 10:7

- The healings usually took place after any of the above 4 things were done by Jesus or the disciples.

- The commands are usually ended with !, or there is a loudness indicated by the command gramatical
remarks. 16 times out of 33 ! is used after a command, that is [close to] 50%!

- In all 33 healings listed below, both Jesus and the disciples all had faith [of their own for the healing].

Out of all 33 healings below, only 3 times (for 4 people) was the faith of the sick/diseased/lame person
instrumental in their own healing.
Out of all 33 healings below, only 4 (possibly a 5th) times did a person came to Jesus asking him to heal
someone they came on behalf of.

The faith of these 4 people was added to the faith of Jesus and the disciples, and healing took place in the
person they came on behalf of.

Below is a listing of every healing of Jesus and the disciples, correlated with the items above.

Matthew 8:1-3 – Touch, A command to be healed:

“Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside.  Suddenly, a man with leprosy
approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make
me clean.”

“The man didn’t know, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd.  But afterward Jesus found him in the
Temple and told him, “Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you.”
Then the man went and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him.”

**Notice that man went on [but had been] in some sort of sin.

Jesus made it a point to tell this man to stop sinning LEST-[in order to avoid, for fear that, in order to
prevent] something worse happening to him.

This indicates that after a healing, sowing and reaping can contribute to not only the same sickness/disease
returning but that it can become worse or that something new that is worse can occur.

John 9:6 – Touch, An action to be obeyed:

Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes.  He

expecting some money.  But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I
have.  In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!”  Then Peter took the lame man by the
right hand and helped him up.  And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and
strengthened.

Who had faith – Peter

**Notice that Peter did not say Look to God, heaven, or the Holy Spirit in verse 4.

They said look at us, why?

The Holy Spirit was in them and they were acting like Christ…..being Christlike.  In verse 6, Peter
continues and says what “I” have “I” give you, not God please give it to him or God is going to do this or
that, or God wants to do this or that.

They were acting in the Stead of Christ because in chapter 1:8 they received power to do so.  They were
identified with Christ, they were being the hands of Christ to this man.

Acts 16:16-18 - An action to be obeyed:
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us,
which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:  The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying,
These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.  And this did she
many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus
Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

Acts 20:9-12 – Touch, A statement that healing has occured:

Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on
and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead.  Paul
went down, threw himself on the young man and put his arms around him. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said.
“He’s alive!”  Then he went upstairs again and broke bread and ate. After talking until daylight, he left.

dysentery. Paul went in and prayed for him, and laying his hands on him, he healed him.

Who prayed – Paul

Who had faith - Paul
Who was healed – Publius’ father

** Who healed him? Paul did, why? Because Paul had been (past tense) freely given power(Acts 1:8)
and authority(Luke 10:19) and the ministry and word of reconciliation and as that Ambassador of
Christ(2 Corinthians 5:18-19), he fulfilled God’s will on earth as it should be in heaven(Matthew 6:10).
