12th Century Rajah Ahmad was the Bruneian warrior who defeated Rajah Avirjirkaya and founded Manila as a
state ruled by a Muslim prince.
14th Century Manila became a province of the Hindu Indonesian Majapahit empire, under the control of
Hayam Wuruk, the greatest ruler of Indonesia
15th Century Tondo was a strong Muslim trading center built on the remains of many previous towns and ruled
by the Brunei sultanate
1485 – 1521 the Sultanate of Brunei, Sultan Bolkiah waged war against the residents of Tondo to break the
Dynasty of Tondo’s monopoly in the China trade.
1574 Manila was baptized under the authorization of Spain and the Vatican as the “Distinguished and
Ever Loyal City” and became the center of Catholicism as well as of the Philippines.
Mid-16th Century The areas of present day Manila were governed by Muslim rajahs. Rajah Sulayman and Rajah
Matanda ruled the Muslim communities south of the Pasig river, and Lakan Dula ruled the
Kingdom of Tondo, the Hindu-Buddhist community north of the river.
17th Century During the Seven Years’ War, the city was captured and held by the British, but the Treaty of
Paris resulted in its restoration to Spain

By the late 15th century, the town was a strong Muslim trading center built on the remains of many
previous towns and ruled by the Brunei sultanate. For a short time in 14th century AD, the small
inhabited area became a province
The said kingdom was prospered economically during the Ming Dynasty because of trade relations with
China. Ancient Tondo has always been the traditional capital of the empire. Its rulers were equivalents
to king and not mere chieftains, and they were addressed as panguinuan or panginoon (lords), anak
banwa (son of heaven), or lakandula (lord of the palace).
