1 Overview

1 Overview

This Overview gives information needed by project managers and foremen, for
presentation to the customer and for site planning.

3BK 17422 1071 RJZZA Ed.04 7 / 32

1 Overview

1.1 Presentation
Clock synchronization between different BTSs is required for typical
applications, such as:

Synchronous handover
Cell shared by two BTSs.

MASTER SLAVE HW+SW limitation

G2 Standard G2/A9100 3

G2 Mini G2/A9100 2

A9100 Medi / Mini G2 1

A9100 Medi / Mini A9100 3 BTSs in chain

2 BTSs in star

Table 1: Possible BTS Synchronization

This method covers retrofit actions for the boards of G2 BTSs, changing the
synchronization mode from "free running" to "PCM" for the master G2 BTSs,
and synchronizing one or several slave BTSs to a master BTS.
G2 Slave BTSs are always in star connection.
G2 BTS equipped with STSE, STSP boards can be master or slave.
G2 BTS equipped with STSR boards can only be slave.

1.1.1 Cases
The following cases apply for the new synchronized BTSs:

Retrofit Action - Preparing the master G2 BTS:

C1: G2 BTS with redundant configuration (2 STSx boards)
C2: G2 BTS non-redundant configuration (1 STSx board).

Master Configuration:
C3: Change of master G2 BTS synchronization mode from "free running"
to "PCM synchronization"
C4: Master A9100 BTS.

Slave Configuration:
C5: Slave G2 BTS(s)
C6: Slave A9100 BTS(s).

1.1.2 Options
None.

1.2 Preparation
1.2.1 Prerequisites
The following prerequisites apply:

All the BTSs on the non-synchronized site are configured as master

All the BTSs on the site, including the new integrated BTSs, are considered
installed, commissioned and connected to the BSC

3BK 17422 1071 RJZZA Ed.04 9 / 32

1 Overview

G2 Mini-BTS Indoor and Outdoor and G2 BTS Standard Outdoor must be

pre-cabled. This means cabling between the connection box and the
subrack is present (old versions of G2 BTS could be without pre-cabling)
Maximum number of BTSs on site is four

Distance between BTSs (according to the cable length) is maximum 10

meters.

To provide a higher quality of synchronized handover, it is preferable

to replace the STSE AAxx or STSE ABxx boards of the Master BTS
with STSE ACxx10 or STSP performing a "Retrofit Action" (see Check
Hardware Technical Status and Perform Retrofit Action on Master G2 BTS
(C1, C2) (Section 2.3.2)). Make sure that the Hardware Technical Status
of the boards is the same, in accordance with Set STSE / STSP, STSR
Board Switches (Section 2.5.3.1)

1.2.2 Site Specific Information

The following site-specific information is needed:

Master BTS identification and type

Slave BTS(s) identification and type.

1.2.3 External Tasks

Figure 7: G2 Mini Indoor BTS XCLK Port Locations

Two cables have to be installed between the right connection ports of the BTSs:

On the Slave BTSs: synchronization cables coming from the Master BTS
have to be connected to the M/N&R ports
On the Master BTS: synchronization cables going to the Slave BTSs have to
be connected to the S1/N&R (for Slave 1) and S2/N&R (for Slave 2) ports

Port N (normal) is connected to port N (normal) of the second BTS

Port R (redundant) is connected to port R (redundant) of the second BTS.

For Slave BTSs, check that the internal cables are connected between the
inside ports of the connection box and CLK IN ports of the STSx boards.

Note: For the Master configuration, the cables exist but they are not connected.

In the specific case of non-redundant G2 BTS, only one synchronization cable

between Master and Slave is necessary.

2 Scenario

Port N of the Master BTS is connected to port N of the Slave BTS

Port R of the Master is connected to port R of the Slave BTS.

To install the synchronization cables:

1. Run and secure the cables in the cable tray between the racks.
2. Introduce the synchronization cable in the BTS compartment through the
cable entry tube. Use a heat-shrinkable sleeve to isolate.
3. Secure the cable inside the plinth.

connection box and the CLK IN ports of the STSx.

2.5.3 Configure G2 BTS Master/ Slave STSE / STSP and STSR Boards
2.5.3.1 Set STSE / STSP, STSR Board Switches
1. Remove the board from the BTS.
2. Set SWITCH 2 (Master or Slave) to:

OFF for a Master BTS (default value for STSE / STSP)

ON for a Slave BTS (default value for STSR).

Note: The position of Switch 2 can be checked at the BTS terminal by following
the menu path:
Show > HW Configuration > SBL and select CLLK from the list.
3. Set SWITCH 3 (Clock synchronization frequency, used when the BTS is
Slave) to:

OFF if Master BTS is a G2

ON in all other cases.

4. Set SWITCH 4 (to change from "PCM synchronization" to "free running",

used for a G2 Master BTS equipped with an STSP board) to:
ON if PCM Synchronization

OFF if free running.

Note: The position of Switch 4 can be checked with the BTS terminal by following
the menu path
Show > HW Configuration > SBL and selecting CLLK from the list.
5. When all switches are correctly set, re-insert the board in the BTS.
2.5.3.2 Hardware Technical Status for STSE, STSP, STSR
Within a BTS, the hardware technical status must be the same for both STSE
(or STSP, STSR) boards.
If two BTS are synchronized, the hardware technical status must be compatible:
