Practice Exercise 1.2. Electric Circuits

Answer each of the following questions accordingly. Show your complete solution if necessary.
1. In the simplest terms you can think of, define what an electrical circuit is.

Electrical circuit is a path of electrical components through which the electric

current flows.

2. Given a battery and a light bulb, show how you would connect these two devices together

with wire so as to energize the light bulb. Explain your answer.

We simply connect both ends of the bulb to the positive and negative.

3. Draw an electrical schematic diagram of a circuit where a battery provides electrical

energy to a light bulb.

4. How could a battery, a light bulb, and some lengths of metal wire be used as

conductivity tester, to test the ability of different objects to conduct electricity?

We can simply place the open wire ends in contact with the object to be tested and

the light bulb is the one who will indicate whether or not the object conduct

electricity.

5. What do the symbols with the question marks next to them refer to? In the circuit shown,

would the light bulb be energized?

Those are Ground Symbols. They are connections that are made to a common

conductor, such as the metal chassis of an automobile or circuit enclosure, or the

actual earth which is usually via metal rods driven into the dirt.

6. What, exactly, is a short circuit? What does it mean if a circuit becomes shorted? How

does this differ from an open circuit?

Short circuit is a situation in which the hot wire carrying live current touches the

neutral wire. If a circuit becomes shorted, the path for current formerly possessing

substantial resistance has been bypassed by a path having negligible (almost zero)

resistance. While the Open circuit is one where there’s a breakage and electric

current will not flow properly.

Now, without moving the following components, show how they may be connected

together with wires to form the same circuit depicted in the schematic diagram above:
