CAT Hydraulic Fluids Have 2 Tiers

 Cat® HYDO™ Hydraulic Oil motor oil-type formulation with zinc AW and
detergents to emulsify water. Also contains anti-rust and anti-foam.
– Change interval 2000 hours, sample at 500 hours
 Cat HYDO Advanced 10 Hydraulic Oil also a motor oil-type formulation
but with a more robust formulation
– Change interval 3000 hours, up to 6000 hours using oil analysis sampling at
500 hours
– Requires Motor oil type formulation with MINIMUM 900 ppm zinc
– Industrial AW oils (such as Rando® HD) are not recommended by CAT BUT
WILL WORK
– Preferred add oil cleanliness for CAT hydraulic systems: ISO No spec/16/13 in
service No Spec/18/15
– No Spec for particles >4 micron

What About a Mixed Fleet?
 CAT/Komatsu want an emulsifying SAE 10 hydraulic, Volvo want AW,

Deere and Hitachi require zinc free
 How do you manage this?

– Suggestion, if only a few CAT/Komatsu machines are to be accommodated,
use SAE 15W/40 or 1000 THF as hydraulic oil
 Zinc free as the hydraulic oil for the Hitachi Deere machines
 AW Hydraulic (Rando HD or HDZ) for Volvo machines
 Be sure to discuss with the fleet maintenance manager specifically ask

about machines under warranty

 Rando HDZ 68 is a great choice
 Volvo sells a line of engine oils and hydraulic fluids under their own

Equipment Lube Specs
Most Excavators and Some Mining Shovels* and Haul Trucks (Use
Chevron for Factory Fill – Volvo Bought Euclid)
 Hitachi builds the Deere line of excavators
 Deere and Hitachi REQUIRE zinc-free Hitachi Hydraulic Oil in
excavators only
– Super EX 46HN, second tier called AU32
– Group III fluid made by Apollo America, an
Idemitsu subsidiary
– Drain interval 4,000 hr top tier
– They require a sample of the oil in the event of
warranty claims
 Chevron is field trialing a reformulated version
of Clarity Synthetic but the current formula of
Clarity Synthetic is not believed to be compatible

Hydraulics Fluids for
 Ursa® Hydraulic is an SAE 10W “motor oil” type formulation. It provides

outstanding performance in mobile hydraulic applications such as CAT
and Komatsu equipment. Temp range is -4°F to 104°F.
– Exceeds CAT 900 ppm zinc requirement (Ursa is 1200 ppm Zn)
– Excellent performance in Vickers 35VQ25 vane pump test
– Good hydrolytic stability Delo TorqForce SAE 10W, a great fluid, fully meets
– Good filterability hydraulic specs, but is not often in smaller machines
due to cost. It MUST be selected as a hydraulic oil
– Keeps systems CLEAN IF the hydraulic system fluid also is circulated to
– Pour point -24°F cool the brakes
– NOT for use in hydraulic systems which are also used to cool brakes such as
in Haul Trucks. There you MUST use TO-4 SAE 10 in order to maintain brake
function.

Hydraulics Fluids for
 Chevron Rando® HD or 1000 THF are excellent choices for many brands of
construction equipment and vocational trucks
 It often is necessary to standardize on one fluid in a mixed fleet. So the question

arises, “Will AW or 1000 THF oil work in Cat and Komatsu equipment?”
The answer is yes, BUT be sure you discuss with the owner and make sure there
are no units under warranty (1000 THF is 1300 ppm zinc – MEETS CAT SPEC,
Rando AW oils typically 350 +/- ppm Zn, DOES NOT MEET CAT SPEC).
 If under warranty, a suggestion (depending on ambient temp) is to use 15W-40

engine oil in the CAT hydraulics. This is OK with CAT in temps from +5°F to
122°F. Use an AW hydraulic oil in other fleet equipment. Depends on the fleet
mix.
 Rando® HD 46 is the primary choice for an AW hydraulic oil. It offers great
oxidation stability, ISOSYN® base oils, excellent demulsibility and filterability,
hydrolytically stable, has approvals from Eaton Vickers, Dennison, Racine, and
Bosch Rexroth.
