Cite at least 2 Filipino characteristics that you think are unique among the Filipino population
and briefly explain each.

1. September is the start of the Christmas season.

Unlike other countries, the Philippines start Christmas festivities as early as September
1. The reason why Filipinos start Christmas celebrations in what we call as ‘BER’ months is
because Filipinos love to countdown days before the big events. The countdown before
Christmas stimulates our productivity in preparing Christmas decorations, buying gifts, and
planning for noche buenas before the actual day comes. (Handog, 2017) When I was a kid, I
really enjoyed the things we do when ‘BER’ months start. My mom and I shop for gifts and
Christmas decorations in Divisoria while trying not to get lost in the crowd there, roam around
the village with my cousins at night so we can carol and then buy Slurpee at 7-11 afterwards,
and Christmas parties and receive so many gifts, I’ll never forget those moments because it
became one of the happiest experiences of my life.

2. Filipinos as ‘unlimited food’ lovers

Unlimited food restaurants are everywhere. Unlimited rice, unlimited juice, unlimited
buffet, unlimited lugaw, etc. The point is, we’re obsessed with unlimited food promos. I think it’s
because Filipinos love food so much, and we also love things that are cheap but offer large
quantities of products, so maybe that’s one of the main reasons why unlimited food promos sell
so much. Even I, who sometimes go on a diet because I do not want to get fat, get swayed by
unlimited food promos all the time. It ruins my diet but food is irresistible. We cannot deny the
charms of unlimited food promos.
