The following text is for questions 1 to 3.

A landslide is defined as the movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth

down a slope. Landslides are a type of "mass wasting," which denotes any down-

slope movement of soil and rock under the direct influence of gravity. The term

"landslide" encompasses five modes of slope movement: falls, topples, slides,

spreads, and flows. These are further subdivided by the type of geologic material

(bedrock, debris, or earth). Debris flows and rock falls are examples of common

landslide types.

Mostly landslides occur due to earthquake that moves the underground plate

causing the element or the subsurface plate displaced. This causes fraction and

landslide. High rainfall during the rainy season will also cause landslide. Long

duration of the rain will occur the water evaporation on the ground surface in large

amounts. The evaporation will make pore or soil cavity, then there would be cracks

on the ground. When rain falls, the rain will infiltrate the cracks. Then, the water

will be accumulated at the bottom of the slope and caused lateral movement which

occur landslide.

Landslides often cause a lot of disadvantages. Landslide can make people

lose their house, lands, and properties because buried by the landslide. The worst is
the loss of life because they can’t run from the landslide.

New airport to cater to more travelers in Yogyakarta

The government expects a new international airport in Yogyakarta, once

completed, will improve the satisfaction of travelers flying to and from the region, a
popular destination for both domestic and international tourists.
The new airport, which is being built in Kulon Progo regency, is expected to
accommodate 50 million passengers annually. It will replace Adisutjipto
International Airport, which currently serves a number of travelers far beyond its
designated capacity.
“The previous airport’s capacity can no longer contain the passenger traffic and the
aircraft movement. There is also a limit to the area expansion [for the airport],”
Budi said on Friday during a ceremony to break ground on the new airport, which
was also attended by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
Budi mentioned that last year alone, passenger traffic at Adisutjipto reached
7.2 million people, while the airport’s terminals were only built to handle 2.1 million
passengers. The apron could also only cater to nine aircraft.
In the first phase, state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura I will build a
3,250mx 60 m runway in the location. In the second phase, the length of the
runway will be extended by 350 meters.
The construction of the first phase is targeted to be finished by March 2019.
“The new airport will also serve long-haul flights, with the furthest to Jeddah,” Budi
said. Land procurement for the airport, meanwhile, has reached 91 percent, the
ministry reported. (hwa)

The following text is for questions 6 to 9.

If the salinity of ocean waters is analyzed, it is found to vary only slightly

from place to place. Nevertheless, some of these small changes are important.
There are three basic processes that cause a change in oceanic salinity. One of
these is the subtraction of water from the ocean by means of evaporation -
conversion of liquid water to water vapor. In this manner, the salinity is increased,
since the salts stay behind. If this is carried to the extreme, of course, white
crystals of salt would be left behind. This, by the way, is how much of the table
salt we use is actually obtained.
The opposite of evaporation is precipitation, such as rain, by which water is
added to the ocean. Here the ocean is being diluted so that the salinity is
decreased. This may occur in areas of high rainfall or in coastal regions where
rivers flow into the ocean. Thus salinity may be increased by the subtraction of
water by evaporation, or decreased by the addition of fresh water by precipitation
or runoff.
Normally in tropical regions where the Sun is very strong, the ocean salinity
is somewhat higher than it is in other parts of the world where there is not as
much evaporation. Similarly, in coastal regions where rivers dilute the sea salinity
is somewhat lower than in other oceanic areas.
A third process by which salinity may be altered is associated with the
formation and melting of sea ice. When seawater is frozen, the dissolved materials
are left behind. In this manner, seawater directly beneath freshly formed sea ice
has a higher salinity than it did before the ice appeared. Of course, when this ice
melts, it will tend to decrease the salinity of the surrounding water.
In the Weddell Sea, off Antarctica, the densest water in the oceans is formed
as a result of this freezing process which increases the salinity of cold water. This
heavy water sinks and is found in the deeper portions of the oceans of the world.

The following text is for questions 15 to 18.

Human body is made up of countless millions of cells. Food is needed to built

up new cells and replace the worn out cells. However, the food that we take must
be changed into substances that can be carried in the blood to the places where
they are needed. This process is called digestion.
The first digestive process takes place in the mouth. The food we eat is
broken up into small pieces by the action of teeth, mixed with saliva, a juice
secreted by glands in the mouth. Saliva contains digestive juice which moisten the
food, so it can be swallowed easily.
From the mouth, food passes through the esophagus (the food passage) into
the stomach. Here, the food is mixed with the juices secreted by the cells in the
stomach for several hours. Then the food enters the small intestine. All the time the
muscular walls of the intestine are squeezing, mixing and moving the food
onwards.
In a few hours, the food changes into acids. These are soon absorbed by the
villi (microscopic branch projections from the intestine walls) and passed into the
bloodstream.

A geyser is the result of underground water under the combined conditions of
high temperatures and increased pressure beneath the surface of the earth. Since
temperature rises approximately 1 F for every sixty feet under the earth's surface,
and pressure increases with depth, the water that seeps down in crack and fissures
until it reaches very hot rock in the earth interior becomes heated to temperature
in excess of 290 F. Because of the greater pressure, the water shoots out of the
surface in the form of steam and hot water. The result is a geyser. In order to
function, then a geyser must have a source of heat, reservoir where water can be
stored until the temperature rises to an unstable point, an opening through which
the hot water and steam can escape, and underground channels for resupplying
water after an eruption.
Favorable conditions for geyser exist in some regions of the world including
New Zealand, Iceland, and the Yellowstone National Park area of the United States.
The most famous geyser in the world is Old Faithfull in Yellow Park. Old Faithfull
erupts almost every hour, rising to a height of 125 to 170 feet and expelling more
than ten thousand gallons during each eruption.

Pakistan’s Houbara Bird Facing Extinction

The indiscriminate hunting of endangered Houbara birds in Pakistan by

rich hunting parties from the Gulf nations have pushed the species toward
extinction. The hunting was initially banned by the Pakistani courts, but under
continuous pressure from the provincial governments of Sind, Baluchistan, and
Punjab, as well as the federal government, recently the courts lifted the ban on
the hunting of this vulnerable species. Some people in Pakistan have been
advocated for sustainable hunting of the species instead of a complete ban, but
this is highly debatable. Reckless hunting for decades has pushed this beautiful
species toward extinction and it is now critically endangered in Pakistan.
No reliable or credible statistics on the population dynamics of the species
are available either. Unless specially protected by law, the species runs the risk of
becoming extinct in the wild in the next few decades. Under these circumstances,
the only logical approach to save the species from extinction in the not-so-distant
future is to immediately start comprehensive captive breeding program for the
species across the nation.
If the captive breeding program runs successfully and produces an
appreciable number of chicks, then reintroduction programs could be initiated in
their wild habitats. Only after rebuilding the population for some time in the wild
and allowing them to breed naturally to reach a sustainable population could
some restricted hunting be planned. Currently, the low numbers have made this
species vulnerable and with zero or poor monitoring, sustainable hunting
practices in Pakistan for this dwindling species will not work.
Game hunting works only when a stable population is achieved with strict
monitoring on the ratio of males to females hunted per season. If the females (no
true statistics available) are being taken out of the population through random
hunting, the population is sure to pass through a bottleneck in the wild habitat,
with high vulnerability to eventual extinction.
The people of Pakistan need to decide what is more important, a few
petrodollars or protecting the biodiversity of the nation.

The following text is for questions No. 26 to 29.

All human beings eat food and make use of the chemical energy in it, so
do all other animals. Perhaps you wonder where all that chemical energy comes
from. Why doesn't the food all get used up?
The answer is that new food is being grown as fast as old food is used up.
It is the green plants that form the new food. Animals either eat the plants or eat
other animals that have eaten plants.
The green substance of plants is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll can absorb
sunlight. When it does so, it changes the energy of the sun into chemical energy.
The chemical energy present in sunlit chlorophyll is used to combine dioxide in
the air with water from the soil. Starch and other complicated compounds are
formed. These are high in chemical energy obtained from the sunlit chlorophyll.
They make up the food on which man-kind and all other animals live. In
the process of forming this food, some oxygen atoms are left over. These are
given off into the air by the plants. The whole process is called photosyntesis.
Thus, plants use sunlight to form food and oxygen to form carbon dioxide
and water again. Plants change the sun's energy into chemical energy. And
animals change the chemical energy into kinetic and heat energy.

The following text is for questions No. 33 to 36.

Biodiesel is a clean burning substitute for petroleum based diesel fuel.

Biodiesel is made of vegetable oil.
The raw materials needed in the production of Biodiesel are a small amount of
methanol and a ready supply of vegetable product. One of the most common
vegetables used in the production of Biodiesel is corn, although depending on the
geographic location of the manufacturing facility many other plants are used as well
(rapeseed, soybeans, flaxseed, etc.). The first process is to use the raw vegetable
product to make vegetable oil. Vegetable oil by itself will not be what you need to
power a car, from here it has to be processed into Biodiesel.
The process for converting vegetable oil into Biodiesel is sometimes called
ester interchange. To complete this process, the vegetable oil has to be combined
with a smaller amount of methanol and then put in the presence of a small quantity
of an alkaline catalyst (for example, 5% to 1% sodium hydroxide). Vegetable oil is
made up of so-called triglycerides, which is a compound of the trivalent alcohol
glycerin with three fatty acids. The goal of ester interchange is to separate the
glycerin molecule from the three fatty acids and replace it with three methanol
molecules. This process then yields roughly 90% Biodiesel and 10% of a glycerin
byproduct. The glycerin byproduct can be used in a number of other chemical
processes for different industries.
