Game on for graduating students

Leeds Metropolitan University will host the fourth Game Republic Student
Showcase on Tuesday 24 May at its Headingley Campus.

The annual event, organised by the industry-led network which promotes the
northern games industry, aims to showcase the best of the north’s university
games talent to the biggest developers in the region.

Final-year and postgraduate students on games courses from universities that

are Educational Partners of the network will display their best work to the
biggest developers in the region including Sumo Digital, Just Add Water and
Revolution Software, who are also sponsoring the event. Last year's Student
Showcase featured more than 80 students and 22 projects.

Bal Singh, BSc (Hons) Games Design Course Leader at Leeds Metropolitan,
said: “Leeds Metropolitan University is very proud to be hosting this event
after participating in the competition for the last 3 years. We welcome our
fellow universities from the north and look forward to seeing all the region’s
students competing and raising the bar yet again in terms of creativity and
fully-functional games. The games companies have shown once again that
they are keen to support this event in terms of giving their invaluable
comments and judgment to all of the competing teams.”

Managing Director of Game Republic, Jamie Sefton, commented: “The Game

Republic Student Showcase is an essential annual event that strengthens the
relationship between games companies and universities in the north. This
year, with universities including Leeds Met, Sheffield Hallam and Bradford on
board as full Educational Partners, it’s going to be an even bigger event.”

Prizes are awarded for first, second and third place in four categories - Game
Design, Game Art, Game Technology and Best Team, and previous awards
have led to work placements for more than a dozen winners and full-time
employment for two graduates. After the Student Showcase award
presentations, there will also be a special presentation from Andy Brammall at
Unity Technologies.
