Middle School Physical Science: What Causes Magnetism?
Middle School Physical Science: What Causes Magnetism?
I. Introduction
The electrons in an atom spin around the atom’s axis. The spinning of these electrons causes the atom to become
magnetic, producing a north pole and a south pole. When most of the electrons spin in the same direction, the material
will become magnetized.
Small groups of these atoms come together to form areas called domains. In these domains, all of the electrons in the
atoms spin in the same direction.
To complete this assignment, answer the following questions about the domains and atoms of magnetized
materials.
1. Explain how the domains of a magnetic material influence magnetism and magnetic fields.
the domains show greater aligning individual atoms are aligned on other domains each
atom acts as a tiny bar magnet.
The spin motion gives rise to the magnetization similar to an electric current and producing a
magnetic field.
4. Use the following table to draw the direction of the domains of a magnetic object and a non-magnetic
object.
