Course Description
The Course aims to discuss the religious trends in contemporary society.
As the target audience are undergraduate students of whom the majority:
Possess no and/or minimum acquaintance with the subject;
May or may not aspire to be a religious propagator.
May or may not pursue further research about modern issues in Islam.
The syllabus is designed to cover as many aspects as possible. The goal is to present students with the
balanced contents on conceptual themes and practical knowledge. Therefore, in terms of deliverable:
concepts, examples, training, and exercises are treated equally. To accommodate that goal, the syllabus is
divided into two parts: one deals with conceptual matters and the other with practicalities.
At the end of the course, students are expected to have gained adequate amount of knowledge and
experience about the contemporary issues in the Muslim society. By the time they finish the course, they
would have been equipped with basic yet sound information that may assist them in:
Addressing contemporary Islamic issues using Qur’an and Sunnah; and
Being vigilant in living in the modern world as a Muslim.

Learning Objectives
The Course aims to:
1. Introduce students to the main topics of the course;
2. Analyze significant contemporary issues;
3. Expose students to different modern issues in a contemporary set-up;
4. Familiarize students with the essential bibliography on the subject;
5. Guide students on developing skills in practical aspects of the subject.

Learning Competencies
After having the course, students are expected to:
1. Possess basic familiarity with important concepts in addressing modern issues connected to Islam.
2. Identify which method should be used to challenge a contemporary issue.

Class lectures supplemented by interactive discussions and audio-visual presentations.
