Discussion:

CLEANING AGENTS

One way of ensuring that tools are in good condition is to clean them after use with the appropriate cleaning agents. Cleaning
agents are substances, usually liquids, powders, sprays or granules that are used to remove dirt, including dust, stain, bad smells and
clutter on tools, equipment and surfaces. Water is the most common cleaning agent. Some cleaning agents can kill bacteria at the

same time. These days, manufacturers can clearly label their products as cleaning agents for disinfection against bacteria, viruses and
fungi.
The selection of cleaning agents should be carefully considered. The material to be cleaned and the type of cleaning to be
done determine the cleaning agent to be used. Here are some common cleaning agents that may be used in a salon:

1. Acetic acid (vinegar) is used to clean hard surfaces. Diluted acetic acid, in the form of vinegar, is harmless. However,
concentrated acetic acid is harsh to the skin and must, therefore, be handled with appropriate care, since it can cause
skin burns, permanent eye damage and irritation to skin tissue.

2. Sodium hypochlorite (household bleach) is used to whiten and remove stains from clothes and towels and as disinfectant.
When used as disinfectant it must be diluted to be used safely. One part liquid household bleach to 100 parts water is
sufficient for disinfecting surfaces, nail care equipment, towel and apron. In disinfecting equipment contaminated with
blood are other secretions, a strong solution is needed ranging from 1:10 to 1:50. For mixing the solution, a measuring up
or other container such as bottle that holds one litter of water (equivalent to four cups of water) is needed.

3. Ammonia is used as a general purpose cleaner for many surfaces such as glass, porcelain and stainless steel. It is also
frequently used for cleaning ovens and soaking items to loosen grime. It results in a relatively streak-free shine surfaces.

4. Ethanol also called ethyl or pure alcohol is used in medical wipes and in most common antibacterial hand sanitizer gels
as an antiseptic. Ethanol is effective against most bacteria, fungi and many viruses.

5. Lemmon juice like vinegar is acidic. Its juice can dissolve gummy build up and remove tarnish and dirt from wood
surfaces. It can also deodorize, remove grease, bleach stains, and disinfect. When mixed with baking soda, it removes
stains from plastic containers.

6. Liquid soap as cleansing agent tends to be more effective than a piece of soap since it leaves fewer residues on surface.
Liquid soap allows insoluble particles such as oil/fat to become soluble in water and be rinsed away.

7. Detergents are synthetic, material commonly available as powders or concentrated solutions. Unlike soap, detergents are
designed specifically so that they do not react with hard water minerals.

8. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is made from soda ash and is slightly alkaline. It has many cleaning attributes and is
environment-friendly. A paste from baking soda can be very effective when used in cleaning and scrubbing equipment. A
solution in warm water will effectively remove the tarnish or rust from sliver and other surfaces.it can soften and remove
odours from clothes and towels. However, do not use baking soda for cleaning aluminium objects because it may cause
damage to the thin protective layer of the aluminium.

9. Sodium carbonate also known as washing soda or soda ash is much more strongly alkaline. It releases no harmful gas
and is far safer than a commercial solvent formula, but gloves must be worn when using it because it is acidic. Like
sodium bicarbonate, washing soda removes grease, wax or lipstick and odours.

How can tools and equipment be kept safe, clean and functional?

It is vital to sterilize metal implements, sanitize wooden tools, and disinfect hand and foot spa machines as well as
environmental surfaces before and after each use. Contaminated tools can cause bacterial and fungal infections that are unsightly,
painful and sometimes, fatal. There are several methods of cleaning and sterilization. Do a cursory cleaning after each nail care service
and deep-clean monthly to keep tools safe and useful all the time.

1. Sterilize metal implements after each use in a hospital-grade disinfectant that is bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal.
This disinfectant can be found in beauty supply stores. Immerse the tools in the disinfectant for 10 minutes.
2. Disinfect foot basins after each use with a bleach solution. Make a 1-to-10 solution by mixing one part bleach with 10
parts water. Using gloves, rinse the basin with the solution to disinfect. If necessary, scrub with a detergent to remove
any dirt or debris.
3. Use a boiling method of sterilization once a month to disinfect all metal implements. Designate one pot for
sterilization to prevent cross-contamination with food. Submerge the tools in boiling water for 10 minutes. Drain the
tools and allow them to dry.
4. Store sterilized metal implements in an airtight, zipper-sealed bag to keep them from being exposed to dirt and
bacteria. Be sure tools are completely dry before storing them. If waiting more than a couple of weeks before the next
nail care service, sterilize the tools again before use.
5. Inspect tools and equipment regularly to identify defective ones for repair, replacement or condemnation.

Keeping the Workplace Clean and Safe

1. All beauty salons must be well-lighted and well-ventilated and must be in good sanitary condition.
2. The salon premises must be free from rodents, vermin, flies or other similar insects.
3. All salon establishments must be provided with continuous running hot and cold water.
4. The curtains and floor coverings in the salon must be washable and kept clean.
5. All hair, used cotton or other waste materials must be removed from the floor immediately, and deposited in a closed
container. Get rid of them from the salon premises at frequent intervals.
6. The rest rooms must be well-sanitized and be provided with individual towels.
7. Each beautician must wear a washable uniform while working on clients.
8. Each client must be provided with a freshly laundered towel.
9. All waste materials should be disposed of in an enclosed waste bin fitted with polythene bin liner, durable enough to resist
tearing.
