Speed, Velocity and Acceleration

1. An arrow is moving at 35 m/s and travels for 5 seconds. How far did the arrow travel?
2. How long would it take for a car to travel a distance of 200 km if it is traveling at a
velocity of 55 km/h?

3. A plane traveled for about 2.5 hours at a velocity of 1200 km/h north. What is the
distance it traveled?

4. If an airplane travels a distance of 500 km in 5 hours, what is its average speed?

5. Pete is driving down 7th street. He drives 150 meters in 18 seconds. Assuming he
does not speed up or slow down, what is his speed in meters per second?

6. A roller coaster is moving at 25 m/s at the bottom of a hill. Three seconds later it
reaches the top of the hill moving at 10 m/s. What was the acceleration of the coaster?

7. A car traveling at 15 m/s starts to decelerate steadily. It comes to a complete stop in

10 seconds. What is it’s acceleration?

8. How long will it take a car to accelerate from 15.2 m/s to 23.5 m/s if the car has an
average acceleration of 3.2 m/s2 ?

9. If a Ferrari, with an initial velocity of 10 m/s, accelerates at a rate of 50 m/s2 for 3

seconds, what will its final velocity be?

10. A car strating from rest accelerates at a rate of 8.0 m/s 2. What is its final speed
at the end of 4.0 seconds?

Free Fall

1. You throw a ball downward from a window at a speed of 2.0 m/s. How fast will it be m
oving when it hits the  sidewalk 2.5 m below?
2. You throw a beanbag in the air and catch it 2.2 s later at the same place at which you
threw it a. How high did it go?
b. What was its initial velocity?

3. A stone that starts at rest is in free fall for 8.0 s.
a. Calculate the stone’s velocity after 8.0 s.
b. What is the stone’s displacement during this time?
4. A 10 kg object is dropped from rest.
a. How far will it drop in 2 s?
b. How long will it take a 5 kg object to drop the same distance?

5. An object is dropped from rest from the top of a 100 m building. How long will it take
for the object to hit the ground?
4.52 s

Projectile Motion

1. A baseball player leads off the game and hits a long home run. The ball leaves the
bat at an angle of 30.0o from the horizontal with a velocity of 40.0 m/s. How far will
it travel in the air?
141.3 m
2. A stone is thrown horizontally at 15 m/s from the top of a cliff 44 meters high. How
far from the base does the stone hit the ground?

3. A steel ball rolls with constant velocity across a tabletop 0.95 m high. It rolls off and
hits the ground 0.352 meters from the edge of the table. How fast was the ball
rolling when it left the table?

4. A ball is launched with an initial velocity of 4.47 m/s at an angle of 66 ° above the
horizontal.
a. What is the maximum height the ball attained?
b. How long did it take the ball to return to launching height?
c. How far did it land?

5. A Physics book slides off a horizontal table with a speed of 1.10 m/s. It strikes the
floor in 0.350 s. Find
a. the height of the table
b. the horizontal distance from the edge of the table to the point where the book
strikes the floor.
