There is no future / past form of can. We use will be able / can to talk about the future.

SAY OR TELL -REPORTED SPEECH
En español podemos traducir say o tell como “decir”, pero en inglés se usan estos verbos de
maneras distintas. Hay unas reglas que indican el uso de uno u otro, aunque en general se
usa say para “decir algo» y tell para “decir algo a alguien.”
Casi todo lo que tienes que saber de say y tell se resume en esta frase:
Say something, Di algo, tell someone- díselo a alguien
Say se usa para contar las palabras que alguien ha usado, usando lo que ha dicho alguien, se usa
para citar, say something.En cambio, tell se usa para decir a quien estaban hablando. Con lo
cual, tell casi siempre se sigue por una persona, tell someone. Es decir, cuando hay un
complemento indirecto (la persona a quién se le dice algo) empleamos tell y, cuando no
indicamos a quién, el verbo que usamos es say.
Ejemplos:
She said she was leaving-Ella dijo que se iba a ir
She told me she was leaving-Ella me dijo a mí que se iba a ir
I told him I was there-Le dije a él que yo estaba ahí
I said I was there-Yo dije que estaba ahí
They told us she went home-Ellos nos dijeron que ella se fue a casa
They said she went home-Ellos dijeron que ella se fue a casa
You told me you loved films-Me dijiste que adorabas las películas
You said you loved films-Dijiste que adorabas las películas
Los estilos directo e indirecto pueden generar cierta confusión veamos la diferencia.
Existen dos formas de contestar a la pregunta «¿Qué ha dicho?»:
● Direct Spech(Estilo directo)- Repetir lo que se ha dicho
● Reported speech(Estilo directo)- Informar de lo que se ha dicho
Estilo directo
El estilo directo repite o cita palabras exactas, tal y como se dijeron. En el estilo directo por
escrito las citas van entre comillas, sin modificar palabra alguna.
Ejemplos:
● She said, «What time will you be home?» and I said, «I don’t know!»-Ella dijo «¿A qué hora
estarás en casa?» y yo le dije «¡No lo sé!»
● «There’s a fly in my soup!» screamed Paul- ¡»Hay una mosca en mi sopa»», gritó Paul
● Antonio said, «There’s an elephant outside the window.»- Antonio dijo «Hay un elefante
fuera»

Estilo indirecto
El estilo indirecto suele emplearse para hablar del pasado, por lo que normalmente implica
modificar los tiempos verbales. Utilizamos verbos introductores como say, tell, ask y es posible
usar la palabra that para presentar el discurso emitido. No se emplean comillas.
She said, «I saw him.» (estilo directo) = She said that she had seen him. (estilo indirecto)
That puede omitirse:
She told him that she was happy. = She told him she was happy. Ella le dijo que estaba feliz

congratulate Annie? Then make a role play.

Lucy: Hi Annie. Congratulations! I heard you are the new captain of the cheerleading team. Annie:
Thanks! Yeah, I’m really excited, but a bit scared too.
Lucy: Scared? How come?
Annie: Well, you know, some of the cheerleaders in the squad are very good and experienced, but
they can be a bit stubborn and bossy.
Lucy: Mmmm, yes. I can see that might be difficult.
Annie: But the coach has given me some good advice.
Lucy: That’s good. What did he say? Annie: Well, he said it’s important to be a good listener. Also, he
told me that you need to be fair and impartial. It doesn’t matter who your best friends are. He told me
to do the right thing for the team.
Lucy: That’s true.
Annie: Also, a good team leader needs to be approachable so people in the team can talk to them
easily about things they are worried about.
Lucy: Well, that’s all good advice! Annie, you are so friendly and nice. No doubt you are going to be
the best cheerleader captain in the history of the school. Don’t worry!
