Activity/ Assessment:
TASK 1:Read each item below and answer the question in a separate document. Each
item has a unique rating relative to the degree of relevance to the learning objectives.
1. What are the reasons of the prominent historians in affirming the authenticity of
Rizal's retraction?
Balaguer visited Rizal during his last hour in Fort Santiago. He claimed
that he was able to manage and persuade Rizal to denounce masonry and return

m
to the catholic field. His testimony was considered as a primary source referring

er as
co
that Rizal wrote a retraction document, and it was used to urge the authenticity of

eH w
the document.

According to Cuerpo de Vigilancia’s account, at approximately 9, the

assistant of the plaza, Senor Maure, ask Rizal if he wanted anything. He replied
that at the moment he only wanted a prayer book, which was brought to him
shortly by Father Marc. He was also seen kissing the crucifix before his
o

execution.

2. What are the proofs used to defend the authenticity of Rizal’s retraction?
A lot of historians reported that Rizal retracted his anti-catholic idea using
his document. There are also doubt on the authenticity that there is no certificate
ed d

of the catholic marriage of Rizal to his wife Josephine Bracken and it was
ar stu

allegedly claimed that the retraction document was a forgery. Ricardo Pascual
stated that the document that has been recovered was not Jose Rizal’s

handwriting.

3. What possible reasons could have pushed Jose Rizal to write his retraction
document according to those who believe that he really retracted?
There was really no marriage between Rizal and Josephine Bracken, but they
sh

lived together during Rizal’s exile in Dapitan. The friars were really wanted to
seek for Rizal’s retraction. With this, the friars even came up with different
formulas of retraction for him to sign. Rizal was also forced to write his retraction
document but there is no signed letter of retraction at all.

4. What are the major arguments/issues on Rizal’s retraction?
The issue regarding Rizal’s retraction is that the original document and the
retracted documents are different from the text found in Jesuit. Some of the
difference is that in the copy of the Jesuit it has a ‘mi calidad’ but in the
archbishop copy it has a ‘ mi cualidad’. One of the major issues also is the
forgery of the document. They called it fake and doubt the authenticity of it.

Task 2: Write 500 words position paper on the retraction of Rizal (50 points)

Knowing the authenticity of a certain document or document that has a significant impact in the
past is really a must. It can either lead you to the truth or mislead you to somewhere else. As per the
retraction of Rizal, it is hard to know if it is an authentic document or not because we were not able to
really witness what happened.

One of the most intriguing issue of Jose Rizal was the alleged retraction that is about his catholic

m
er as
faith. In this issue, it also includes his marriage with Josephine Bracken. The Roman Catholic defenders
claims that the document is a forgery. They have stated in some sources that the retraction of Rizal did

co
eH w
not actually happen. These sources said he had been persuaded by the friars who visited him within 24
hours before his execution to confess the sins they accused him of committing. The Jesuits were with

o.
rs e
him almost every minute, six priests were relaying, usually two at a time, in an effort to bring about the
ou urc
conversation of Rizal. The main motive of which is to get Rizal to admit and retract his errors against
religion. If the friars of the future should claim with certainty that Rizal 's views on the friars were not
what he really believed, it would cast doubt on everything he had written, making people refuse to
o

believe. But Rizal stood his ground and even refused to mark his signature on the notice given to him
aC s

announcing his execution declaration. Whereas the other stands for the conflicting, that of which Rizal
vi y re

claims to personally sign a retraction letter. Sources indicate there are proofs that Rizal does not actually
retract. His burial is one example of this. He was not buried inside a Catholic cemetery and was listed as
a (criminal) suicide case, a neglected body along with the heaps of corpses with unknown causes of
ed d

death. If he had retracted and admonished Masonry, the Church would have had the decency to give
ar stu

him a proper Catholic burial and declare his death under the list of Catholics, claiming his retraction and
reconciliation with religion, to acknowledge the confession which the friars claimed they witnessed Rizal
committed. The suspected retraction papers were also disclosed just around 30 years ago after Rizal’s
is

death. A concern was raised when two statements of the declaration were acknowledged, both of which
differed a great deal. Many say that one of these was made, and some say that in the hands of Spanish
Th

Catholic friars the u-original copy was aged and rotted.

If I were to asked about my opinion regarding the issue, I personally would want to believe that
sh

Rizal did not retract. For I believe that if he really retracted then he would somehow lose the trust of the
Filipinos who really considered him as a hero. We should still remember as well that Jose Rizal is a
person as well who commits mistake and never perfect. We may never understand his personality
because we were not really there to witness it, but let us just look at the brighter side that he did
sacrifice his self for the freedom of his fellowmen.
