1. Why did Jose used the surname Rizal when he enrolled in Ateneo de Municipal? (5 points)

- Paciano accompanied Pepe to Manila and had him enrolled at the Ateneo Municipal.  As a
protective brother, he changed his brother’s surname from Mercado to Rizal to prevent the friars
in knowing their affiliation.  Luckily, Pepe was able to make most out of his student life in
Ateneo.  Paciano also made sure that all his brother’s needs were well taken cared.

2. Describe the academic climate of Ateneo de Municipal. (10 points)

- Ateneo de Manila which was formerly Ateneo Muncipal, was a boys’ school and its graduates
finish their education with the title bachiller en artes which is in Rizal’s time was equivalent to
today’s high school.  In the Ateneo, classes last the whole day beginning with a mass at 7
o’clock in the morning. All students are required to attend such masses. The students are under
strict supervision by their teachers. This explains why most of Rizal’s poems and other literary
works were pro-Spanish and pro-Catholic such as his poem praising the victory of Urbiztondo
over the Moros of Jolo and his poem about the Virgin Mary. All the time in Ateneo is devoted to
study, academics and co-curricular activities such as contests in Spanish, Latin and Greek.
Ateneo remained a boy’s school during the Spanish period.

3. Describe the academic climate of UST. (10 points)

-  The University of Santo Tomas on the other hand, was the only institution in the Philippines
that provided college degrees. As to the academic climate in both institutions, in the Ateneo,
classes last the whole day beginning with a mass at 7 o’clock in the morning. All students are
required to attend such masses. The students are under strict supervision by their teachers, At
the University of Santo Tomas, the students were given more freedom. Half of the day is given
to study and the rest was free time. The students are not anymore required to attend mass. This
freedom is not leniency but this was allowed by the university authorities on the basis that the
college students are believed to be more mature and responsible. The University of Santo
Tomas was much harder compared to Ateneo because UST was a university and the Ateneo
was a high school. The University of Santo Tomas, began admitting women in its Escuela de
Matronas y Pateras or the school for midwives in its San Jose Building in the far side of
Intramuros. The women had to be married or widowed and if their husband was still alive, must
have his permission.
4.  Why do you think Rizal was inspired to write while studying in Ateneo de Municipal?

(10 points)

Rizal launched himself into studies that sharpened not only his capacity for critical
thinking and discernment, but also his love for God and country.Having neglected his
studies the previous year because of the reason that he was offended by the teacher’s
remarks.  Until Rizal studied harder, and once more he became an “emperor” after
losing his class leadership He had 3 classmates from Binan who had also been his
classmates in the school of Maestro Justiniano at the end of the school year, he received
excellent grades in all subjects and a gold medal
Who motivated him to develop more his literary abilities?
   - Francisco de Paula Sanchez inspired him to study harder and write poetry

List at least 5 titles of his literary works.

Jose Rizal wrote more poems such as:

 Filicitacion (Felicitation)
 El Embarque: Himno a la Flota de Magallanes (The Departure Hymn to Magellan’s
fleet)
 Y Es Espanol: Elcano, the first to circumnavigate the world)
 El Combate: Urbiztondo Terror de Jolo (The Battle: Urbiztondo, Terror of Jolo)
 Un Recuerdo a Mi Pueblu (In Memory of My Town)

5. How were the Filipino students in UST were treated by the Dominican Friars/Professors? (5
points)

- The UST students and the other granted them more freedom. That freedom was actually
responsible for allowing Rizal to show his true colors especially when he wrote his prize-winning
poem A La Juventud Filipina which showed his nationalistic side. The same can be said for his
allegorical play Consejo de los Dioses.
