A Venn diagram is a diagram that shows all possible logical relations between a
finite collection of different sets. These diagrams depict elements as points in the
plane, and sets as regions inside closed curves. A Venn diagram consists of
multiple overlapping closed curves, usually circles, each representing a set.

Sample Problem:
A group of 40 students were surveyed and asked if they like adobo or sinigang
(menu in the canteen). 26 students say they like Adobo, 25 students say they like
Sinigang and 14 says they like both dishes.
Questions:
1. How many students like adobo only?
2. How many students like sinigang only?
3. How many students do not like both dishes?
Solution:
a. First, we must illustrate the problem using Venn Diagram. Since there are two
choices, we will be using two overlapping circles.

b. Now let us identify the number of


students who like both of the dishes.
c. Next, let us identify the number of
students who like adobo, there are 26,
but since we already have 14, so, 26-
14=12
d. For the number of students who like
sinigang, we have 25, so 25-14=11

Going back to the question, 1. How many students like adobo only? There are
12 students who like adobo only. 2. How many students like sinigang only?
There are 11 students who like sinigang only. 3. How many students do not
like both dishes? For this one, you will just add the numbers inside the Venn
diagram, so, 12+14+11= 37. There are total of 40 students, 40-37=3. There are
3 students who do not like the dishes.

have hiked both in Mt. Arayat and Mt. Pinatubo, 11 hikers said they both went to
Mt. Arayat and Mt. Telakawa, 10 said they have hiked both at Mt. Pinatubo and
Mt. Telakawa, while 5 said they have hiked in the three mountains.
