1. SUBSET
The set B is a subset of set A if all elements of B are also elements of A. In symbol,
B ⊆ A. We can also say that set A contains the elements in set B or A ⊇ B. If B is a
proper subset of A we write it as B A
All the elements in set B are also in the
For example: A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8}
elements of set A. Therefore set B is a
B = {2, 4, 6, 8} subset of set A
To identify the subsets of set B, we write B= { {2}, {4}, {6}, {8}, {2,4}, {2,6}, {2,8},
{4, 6}, {4,8}, {6,8}, {2,4,6}, {2,4,8}, {4,6,8}, {2,4,6,8}, ∅ }
2. UNIVERSAL SET
The universal set U is the set that contains all objects under consideration.
3. NULL SET
The null set (∅) is an empty set, it is indicated by a symbol ∅ or { }. The null set is a
subset of any set.
4. CARDINALITY OF A SET
The cardinality of a set A is the number of elements contained in A.
Example: A= {white, red, yellow, blue}
The cardinality of set A is 4
Uppercase letters will be used to name sets and lowercase letters will be used to
refer to any element of a set. Example: G= { m,a,t,h }
Congratulations! You got the first key. Now that you have
the knowledge on the basic concepts for SETS, your next challenge
is how to write sets. Are you ready for the next challenge? Let’s go!
