SOIL MECHANICS

By: Dushyant Sir

EFFECT OF COMPACTION ON ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF SOIL

• STURCTURE of soil: effect of compaction

on structure of soil is more in fine grained
soil and less in coarse grained soil.
• At same compactive efforts structure on
dry of optimum side is found to be
………………….
And wet side of Optimum it is found to be
………………..
Because at LOW water content
……………….…....occurs.
And as water content increases
…………………......generates.
• Permeability
• Compressibility

• Strenght

• Failure

• Pore water pressure

• Shrinkage

• Swelling
ROLLERS
• Smooth wheeled roller:
• Compaction is achieved by application of pressure over soil.
• Suitable for coarse grained soil, like crushed stones and gravels
• Used in compaction of roads.

• Sheep Foot Roller:

• Compaction by kneading action.
• Used for cohesive soils like clay.
• Used in earthen dams.

• Pneumatic type Roller:

• Compaction by combined action of pressure and Kneading.
• Suitable for all type of soils but generally suitable for cohesive
soils.
• Used in construction of roadways, airfields & homogenous Dams.
• Rammers:
• Compaction by impact, used in confined
areas.
• Suitable for all type of soils generally
used for cohesionless soils.
• Used in basements, retaining walls,
trench fills.
• Vibrators:
• Compaction by vibration, used in
confined areas.
• Used in cohesionless soil (used for
compaction of sand)
COMPACTION OF SAND

• Behavior of sand different

from gravel, clay and silt
in terms of compaction.
• It is because of bulking of
sand, apparent cohesion,
honey comb structure.
RELATIVE COMPACTION

• It is defined as the ratio of the dry unit weight of soil in natural conditions to maximum
dry unit weight of soil in its densest state.
