Rights
Specific objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
i. explain the basic human and democratic rights which all people have.
ii. defend your human and democratic rights.
Rights is defined as;
a) Refer to political, economic, social, and other advantages to which someone has a just claim,
morally or in law.
b) Include the freedom to act or not to act in a particular fashion.
c) Involve duty to permit the same freedom to others.
Types of right
There are two main types of right;
1. Human rights:The rights to life, liberty and the security(privacy) of person.
2. Political ( democratic) rights:

 The rights of thought, opinion and expression

 rights of nationality

 Freedom of association,

 Freedom movement .

And also Rights of Women and children are part of democratic right.
The Ethiopian Constitution under Article 36 sub-article 1 states ;
Every child has the right:
a) To life;
b) To a name and nationality;
c) To know and be cared for by his or her parents or legal guardians;
d) Not to be subjected to exploitative practices,
e) To be free of corporal punishment or cruel and inhumane treatment in everywhere.
f) have the right to education and health care
The Ethiopian Constitution under Article 35 sub-articles 1, 2, and 7 state the rights of women:
a) Women shall, in the enjoyment of rights and protections provided for by this
Constitution,have equal right with men.
b) Women have equal rights with men in marriage as prescribed by this Constitution.
c) Women have the right to acquire, administer, control, use and transfer property. They shall
also enjoy equal treatment in the inheritance of property.
Article 10 of the Constitution deals with Human and Democratic Rights as follows:
1. Human rights and freedoms, emanating from the nature of mankind, are inviolable and
inalienable.
2. Human and democratic rights of citizens and peoples shall be respected.
