SECTION 2

STBEL ST{EET PILII{G

2.1 GENERAL

The Contractor shall supply all labour, materials, plant and equipment, etc., and
construct the steel sheet pile walls as shown on the drawings.

The steel sheet piling rvork is to be canied out in accordanoe with this
specification for steel sheet piling and to the approval andlor satisfaction of the
s0.

Prior to commencement of work the Contractor shall submit, in detail, his

i
h: method and sequence of construction of the steel sheet piiing for the SO's
approval. The subrnission to and approval by the SO of such method and
scquence of construction shall not relieve the Contractor of any of his duties or
responsibilities under this Contract.

A preliminary soil investigation has been carried out. The Contractor is advised
to study these records and he is 1o note that the conditions revealed must be
taken as a guide only. The Contractor must include in his tender for carrying out
the work in the conditions as he finds them on site. No claims will be entertained
in respect of any additional wark in wirich he may be involved or additional
€xpense incurred due to any inaccuracies contained in the soil investigation
records.

t, SHOR${G AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS TO ADJOINING

BUILDI}iGS

Belore the steel sheet piling work commences the Contractor is required to
underrake an adequate survey of adjacent structures which may be afected by
the intended work. Such a survey should include site boundaries and building
lines; conditions of adjoining and neighbouring buildings and recording o1
defbcts; extent of vaults, tunnels and similar underground structures, locatiJn of
utility services, the nature, quality and legal definition of the walls abutting the
site.

The Contractor shali be solely responsible for the stability of the adjoining
structures and where necessary, allow in his tender for shoring, strutting, rtr., to
the adjoining building during the steel sheet piling operation.

A.ll shoring shall be designed or approved by a competent and experienced

person and shall be so positioned as to leave clear the space needed for the piling
work and all subsequent building operations.

2.3 IIATEITIALS

Steel sheet piles shall be straight, true to sectioq square and flat at cut ends and
free from injurious surfuce defects. Piles which in the opinion of the SO are
defective in any way shall be rejected and replaced by the Contractor at his own
cost as directcd.

The Contractor shall allow in his tender for rolling margins above or below the
calculated lengths on all sections but no payment will be made for these margins
The maximum rolling margins shall be 76.20 mm over and 50.80 mm under the
specified lengths.

.A
DRTVING PLAI"{T

The piles shall be supported by means of temporary guide walings and the
I '""' hammer must be fitted with leg-grips or leg guiders which position the hammer
corrcctly on the pile.

The size of hammer to be used for driving sheet piles must be adequate for the
length ofpile, the required penctration and the properties ofsoil encountered and
shallbe approved by the SO.

TIANDLE AND PITCtr

Slieet piles shail be lifted by slinging holes provided in the sheet piles. if slinging
holes are not provided, the piles shall be lifted by wire rope slings" which should
be tightened by means of timber wedge driven between the rope and the pi1e.

Sheet pile should be supported or guided at two levels during driving, and for
this purpose, one pair of guide wallings should be located as loi *r poriiblr.

I
2.6 OBSTRUCTICINS

The rates siratl inciude for excavation or by other means in any material to
remove obstructions below existing ground level which may be sufficient to
prevent installing or which interfere with the proper alignment of the piles,
tirnbering, backfilling, the restoration of the ground around the piles and any
other work which may be required to completc the operation to the satisfaction
of the SO.

2.7 DRIVING
The steel shect pitcs shallbe drivenusing an approved type of cap or anvilblock
; which shall be properly shaped to the outlined of tire treaA oftne pite.

The steel sheet piles shall be driven vertical to the lines shown on the drawings
with a tolerance of 25 nrm. The Contractor shall ensure that creep and lcan shl'll
not occur.
PRCSB- steel sheet piling s2-2t4
Tho Contractor shall submit to the S0 for his approval the method he proposes
to adopt for driving the piles,

The foilor.ving method of "Driving in Panels" is suggested for the consideration

of the Contractor:-

(a) The work shall commence by pitching and driving to part penetration a pair
of piles with precautions bcing taken to ensure tJrat they are truly vertical.

(b) Frotn six to fwelve pairs of piles are then pitched and interlocked in
position and held securely in the guide walings. A panel of piles is thus
formed in which the first pair of piles is the one already partly driven. The
next pair of piles 1o be driven is the last in the panel, also to only part
penetration; it is essential that this pair is also truly vertieal when driven,
The remaining pairs of piles are thcn driven to their final level commencing
with the pair ne:,tto the end pair and finishing with the fust pair"

(c) Aftcr the firsi panel has been driveq a further panel is pitched and driven in
the similar manner, the last partly driven pair of piles in any panel forming
the first pair of piles in the next panel.

(d) When the final level of the piles is at or near ground level, the last pair of
piles in a panel must be sufficientiy far out or the ground to provide support
and guidance for adjacent pairs ofpiles that are pitched but not yet driven.

All steel sheet piles shall be driven to penetration lengths as shown on the
drawings or as directed on site and shalf not be driven-to set. However, the
Contractor shall nevertheless arrange for the taking of sets and blowcounts and
any other information related to the pile driving as and when required by the SO
for the purpose ofdetennining the bearing capacity ofthe pile for vertical loads.

Ifdriving reaches refusai before the specified penetration ofthe piles is attained,
a heavier hammer subject to the approval of the SO shall be used. No pile sha1l
be cut offwithout thc approval and/or consent of thc SO.

2.8 SPTICING OF'STEEL SHEET PILES

If and when extensions of steel slieet piles are so required, the e>ccension piece
shall be in a single length to the approval of the So and not made up of two or
more short pieces.

The Contractor shall fabricate the splice by welding, all to the approvai of the
SO, Such joint will be designed to transmit the full strength of the pile section in
bearing, shear and bending. The Contractor shall submit information regarding
spiicing, welding, etc., together with detail drawings for the SO,s approval.
