INTRODUCTION
 The gravitational forces of the sun and the moon combined with the
rotation of the earth result in an alternate rise and fall of the sea levels.
 At one particular place, it usually occurs twice on a lunar day. The rise of
the sea level is called the high tide, whereas the fall is called the low tide.
When the earth and moon’s gravitational field are in a straight line, the
influences of these two fields become very strong and causing millions of
gallons of the water flow towards the shore resulting in the high tide
condition.
 Likewise, when the moon and earth’s gravitational fields are perpendicular
to each other, the influences of these fields become weak, causing the
water to flow away from the shore resulting in a low tide condition.
TYPES OF TIDES
MAIN PARTS OF TPP

 THERE ARE FOUR MAIN PARTS:

1. BARRAGE
2. SLUICE GATE
3. TURBINE AND GENERATOR
BARRAGE

 A tidal barrage is a dam-like structure with turbines placed at the

bottom of the reservoir.
SLUICE GATE

 A sluice gate is a gate installed in the channel to manage the water

flow and water level in the channel.
 A sluice gate is traditionally a wood or metal barrier sliding in
grooves that are set in the sides of the waterway
TURBINE AND GENERATOR

 Tidal turbines are similar to wind turbines in that they have blades
that turn a rotor to power a generator.
 They can be placed on the sea floor where there is strong tidal flow.
Because water is about 800 times denser than air, tidal turbines have
to be much sturdier and heavier than wind turbines
ADVANTAGE

 Tidal power is a known green energy source, at least in terms of

emitting zero greenhouse gases.
 Tidal power plants can last much longer than wind or solar farms, at
around four times the longevity.
 It's a Renewable Source of Energy. The tides will always flow and
move, which means that it is a source of energy that we can use
time and time again
 It is Environmentally Friendly.
 Tides Are Predictable.
 It Generates Energy at Low Speeds.
DISADVANTAGE

 The cost: building tidal power plants is currently pretty expensive.

 Installing a tidal system is technologically challenging.
 Effects on the environment: tidal power plants aren't always good
for the environment around them.
 Location limits.
 The variable intensity of sea waves
MAJOR POWERPLANT IN THE WORLD
FUTURE?

 In society with energy with increasing energy needs it becomes

more important to have more alternative source of power to keep
up with energy needs.
 The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy should prepare a proper
policy on tidal energy since the development of this sector is
primarily their responsibility,” says an official of the GPCL,
 The Gujarat government is all set to develop India’s first tidal energy
plant. The state government has approved Rs 25 crore for setting up
the 50 MW plant at the Gulf of Kutch.
 But despite the huge potential, India has no policy on tidal energy.
“A clear policy is very important for developers to have clarity on
tariff and commercial development of tidal energy in the country,”
CONCLUSION

 Although not widely used, tidal energy has the potential for future electricity
generation. Among other sources of renewable energy tidal energy has
suffered due to the relatively high cost and limited availability of sites for
construction. However, due to the recent technological developments
indicating that the economic and environmental costs can be brought down
to competitive levels, there seems to be a bright future for tidal energy
generation.
