Economic Profile of the Philippine Electronics Industry

The Philippine economy has been steadily growing and emerging in past few years, and in

fact, it is now widely regarded as the world's largest center for business process outsourcing. In

connection with that, the Philippine electronics industry is one of the greatest contributors to the

country's manufacturing sector as it continues to pursue excellency and competency. From 20 th

century up to present, electronics industry emerges, and it is now considered as one of the

largest global industries. In the early age of electronics industry, it all starts with a simple

transmitter and receivers, until through deeper study in the field of electronics, this led to what

we have today. And now, as the world continues to mold and move into technological state, the

electronics industry continues to grow, cultivate and processed for a better product

Philippine electronic industry starts at the year 1970, aside from low cost production and

low labor worker, Philippine offers a low value-added component. In 2013, the semiconductor

and electronics industry in the Philippines accounted 41% of total export of row electronics

components. By identifying the needs of clients, the sector aims to raise the country's

semiconductor and electronics manufacturing index and standard. The Philippines'

semiconductor and electronics industries, Inc. (SEIPI), aspires to magnify the Philippines as a

global competitor in semiconductor and electronics technology. Through training, research and

development, advocacy, information, and networking and services, it continues to hone and

promote competency and growth prospects in the electronics manufacturing and technology

businesses.

The electronics industry in the Philippines has been considered as the backbone of the

Philippine economy after agricultural and forestry products. The huge effect of electronics
industry indicates its impact to the growing economy of the country. According to the SEIPI,

each one peso increases in each export sales produces 0.12 cents aside from the indirect taxes

for the economy and additional 0.11 to 0.25 cents for household income. Also, quality jobs are

also producing and creating an increase in investments.

And now, amidst of the pandemic, electronics industry still plays a significant role in the

digital transformation and has continued to provide and support the Philippine economy. Aside

from supporting the economic recovery because of pandemic, the said sector plays also in the

digitalization of industries. Well, by implementing different programs and institutions that will

support the electronics industry sector such as educational institution, research institution,

industry group and government institution, this all led the industry on a higher standard.
