B. Data and Observations (20 points)

Table 1. Physical Appearance of Lake Water Sample

Observations
Before adding alum The water was dark and dirty

After addition of alum The water cleared a little

While stirring While stirring the water, the contaminants

begin coagulating.
After filtration After filtration, the water became clear, and
then the dirt left in the filter.

Table 2. Observed Properties of Water Sample

Property Before Treatment After Treatment

Color Dark Clear or Colorless

Turbidity, NTU Between 24 and 25 0

pH 25 6.7

C. Follow-Up Questions (10 points)

1. What are the different factors that affects the quality of water?

- Erosion
- Dissolved oxygen
- Temperature
- Toxic and Hazardous chemicals

2. What is the role of a coagulating agent in the process of purification?

- Coagulation removes the small particles such as dissolved substances, and coagulation
will set aside the particles from water when infiltration.

3. Give other substances that can be used as coagulating agent in water purification
besides aluminum sulfate and ferric chloride.

- Hydrated lime
- Magnesium carbonate
- Aluminum chloride
- Ferrous sulfate

4. What is the purpose of stirring after the addition of alum in water sample?

- To coagulate the substances and to ensure a complete chemical reaction.

5. Reverse osmosis is another method of purifying water. How does it work?

- It filters out unwanted molecules and large particles such as contaminants and
sediments like dirt from water, and Reverse osmosis filtration system works by forcing
water through special fine membrane to eliminate impurities that may not be visible.
