This document discusses how salsa dancing can impact physical and emotional health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Physically, salsa dancing is an aerobic activity that can help with heart health, endurance, weight loss, and lower resting heart rate. Emotionally, while social aspects are limited, salsa dancing alone can still relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and boost self-esteem. While it may not be the most impactful activity, salsa dancing provides benefits and is a way to care for overall well-being during the pandemic.

During this pandemic, how will you apply these energy systems with your day to day activities?
Answer:
By definition, energy is the ability to do work, and is characterized by three
energy systems which refer to the specific mechanisms in which energy is produced and used by one’s body through metabolism. Despite us only staying at home during the pandemic and therefore lessening the amount of the strenuous activities we do, this doesn’t change the fact that our bodies still undergo through the process of producing and using energy; therefore, we must understand how to utilize them during our day-to-day activities to stay productive and remain healthy. One of the three energy systems is called the ATP-PC Energy System. Such system does not utilize oxygen and instead relies on the ATP-PC or creatine phosphate system stored within muscle fibres for quick-serve bursts of energy. In order to condition the ATP-PC system, one must build in adequate rest and stop the session if the quality of the movements or their power decreases significantly. Examples of activities that focus on the ATP-PC Energy System include working out with weights, practicing one’s power endurance through simple exercises at home, and lifting heavy objects from one part of the house to another. The next energy system is the Anaerobic Energy System. This energy system uses carbohydrate to produce ATP. Activities lasting 30 seconds to 3 minutes are primarily fuelled by energy produced by this system. This energy system is primarily used in high-intensity interval trainings/exercises such as yoga and Pilates, and even in jumping, heavy weightlifting, and brisk-walking whenever moving from one place to another. Lastly, the Aerobic Energy System, contrary to the Anaerobic Energy System, requires oxygen to help with energy production, and it provides energy for low intensity activities that last anywhere from two minutes to a few hours. Activities that make use of the aerobic energy system may be as simple as walking, climbing up and down the stairs, dancing to a Zumba exercise, and aerobics. Just like any other process in the human body, energy systems are essential as they enable every cell, tissue and organ of our bodies to function and survive. Without sufficient energy being continuously supplied through the energy systems, our bodies cease to function. It is our responsibility to maximize what our own body can do for us in order to ensure we are making the most that we can to be in a good condition during these trying times. Do you think Salsa dance plays a significant role to your physical and emotional health in this time of pandemic? Explain your answer.
Answer:
Due to the onset of the pandemic, we resort to various activities to keep
ourselves somewhat sane and to make ourselves entertained within the walls of our own homes. Activities may differ from person to person depending on their interests – working out, watching TV, listening to music, making art, and even dancing to serve as an ‘escape’ from reality. Dancing may take on many forms; however, we will turn our attention specifically to Salsa dance and how it might affect our physical and emotional health – and whether or not it would affect us at all. Salsa is a syncretic dance form originating in Cuba. It is normally a partner dance whose movements have roots in the Cuban Son, Cha Cha Cha, Mambo and other dance forms. In my opinion, this dance has a wide range of physical benefits. This dance a unique kind of exercise since it provides the heart-healthy advantage of an aerobic exercise, builds endurance and stamina, aids with weight loss, and can eventually lead to a reduced heart rate over time. One may engage in this dance form during the pandemic as a type of exercise at home to achieve and attain the aforementioned benefits, which, in summary, is to get you in shape and keep you in shape as well. On the other hand, in the emotional aspect, Salsa is originally a dance meant to be performed with a partner. It is a social dance, and therefore a great approach to strengthen social interactions and relationships. Dancing may be used to express feelings, emotions, personality, thoughts, and is consequently a very direct instrument to develop new friendships. However, this is seemingly difficult as we must keep ourselves safe and as much as possible avoid contact with others to reduce the likeliness of us contracting COVID-19. Despite this, I still think that Salsa dance may still provide emotional impact for us in spite of not being able to dance with others. Salsa dancing has been found to be an excellent stress reliever. An individual can remove tension, anxiety, and unpleasant feelings through dancing. Dancing is an excellent way to overcome shyness and increase one's self-esteem. Salsa dance may not necessarily provide the MOST significant role to our physical and emotional health in the pandemic; but it may indeed be helpful to us and can provide a variety of benefits. Above all, we should strive to take care of our well- being, along with our health, by keeping ourselves healthy not only physically but holistically as well.
