Section A [45 marks]
Answer all questions in this section.
1. The histogram shows the duration of the speeches given by the headmaster of a school during school
assemblies.

(a) What is the unit for the frequency density? [1 mark]

(b) Complete the following frequency table for the data. [2 marks]

Time (t minutes) Frequency

2<𝑡≤4
4<𝑡≤6
6<𝑡≤7
7<𝑡≤8
8 < 𝑡 ≤ 10
10 < 𝑡 ≤ 16

(c) Estimate the mean time of the speeches. [2 marks]

(d) Forecast a possible probability a speech by the headmaster in the next assembly will be shorter
than 10 minutes. [2 marks]

2. A game is played using an ordinary six-sided die. A player throws the die. If the result is 2, 3, 4 or 5,
then that result is the player’s score. If the result is 1 or 6, the player throws the die a second time and
the sum of both throws is the player’s score. The events 𝐴 and 𝐵 are defined as follow:
𝐴: The player’s score is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9.
B: The player has two throws.
1
(a) Show that P(𝐴) = 3 . [3 marks]
(b) Find (i) P( 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) [2 marks]
(ii) P( 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) [2 marks]
(iii) P( 𝐴 | 𝐵) [2 marks]
(iv) P(𝐵|𝐴′) [3 marks]

3. (i) The diagrams below show the graphs of two functions f and g. [2 marks]

For each function f and g, give a reason why it cannot be a probability density function.

(ii) A continuous random variable X has probability density function f given by

𝑘𝑥, 1≤𝑥<5
𝑓(𝑥) = {
0, 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒
(a) Determine the value of k. [3 marks]
(b) Sketch the graph of f (x). [2 marks]
(c) Find the P(X > 4). [2 marks]

4. The marks obtained by 30 students in a mock examination (x) and in the final examination (y) for
Mathematics are recorded. It is found that 30 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 80 and 45 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 95. Then linear product
moment correlation coefficient between x and y is calculated to be 0.989.
Comment on the reliability of the estimates made in the following:
(i) The regression line of y on x is used to estimate the mark obtained in the final examination by a
student who scored 43 in the mock examination. [2 marks]
(ii) Suppose that the linear product moment correlation coefficient between x and y is calculated to be
0.889 instead. The regression line of y on x is used to estimate the mark obtained in the final
examination by a student who scored 25 in the mock examination. [1 mark]

The following table shows the respective scores obtained by the seven students:
Student A B C D E F G
x 8 10 13 16 20 7 18
y 38 20 15 23 60 48 36
Plot the data on a scatter diagram of y against x, and comment on your diagram. [3 marks]

5. The following table shows the prices and the values of the main exports of a country, with the value
being the product of the price and quantity.

Year
Product 2020 2021
Price Value Price Value
(RM) (RM ’000) (RM) (RM ’000)
A 15 18 25 10
B 20 22.5 20 25
C 10 80 12 60
(a) By using 2020 as the base year, calculate Laspeyres price index for the year 2021. Comment the
answer. [4 marks]
(b) If the relative price index continues to increase at the same rate, what is the relative price index
in 2022 with 2020 as the base year. [2 marks]

6. (a) What is meant by deseasonalised time series? [1 mark]

(b) The electricity bill, RM in thousands, of a company are tabulated below.

Year January April July October
2013 - 662 712 790
2014 686 718 821 846
2015 744 780 826 875

If the seasonal variation is -56 for the first quarter, -39 for the second quarter, 45 for the third quarter,
and 51 for the fourth quarter,
(i) interpret the seasonal variation for the first and fourth quarters. [2 marks]
(ii) find the seasonally adjusted data for 2015. [2 marks]

Section B [15 marks]

Answer any one question in this section.

7. (a) Two events 𝐴 and B are such that P(𝐴) = , P(B) = and P(𝐴 |B) = .
8 4 6
Show that whether the events 𝐴 and B are independent or mutually exclusive. [5 marks]

(b) The probability that an orange sold in a fruit store is rotten is 0.02.
(i) If the oranges in the fruits store are packed in packets, determine the maximum number of
oranges per packet so that the probability that a packet chosen at random does not contain
rotten oranges is more than 0.85. [5 marks]
(ii) If the oranges in the fruits store are packed in boxes each containing 60 oranges, find,
using a suitable approximation, the probability that a box chosen at random contains less
than three rotten oranges. [5 marks]
