Red
I can show my practical skills and describe what I am doing as follows
1. I can use the save as command to save a copy of a file with a new name or in a new folder
2. I can use online help, an on-line tutorial and online assistance (or wizard),
I can explain the difference between each of these
3. I can set page orientation to landscape or portrait to fit information on a page
4. I can format text to set font, size and style
5. I can use the edit commands to amend, insert and delete information in a document
6. I can print a hardcopy without wasting paper (by not checking errors or setting page range)
7. I can choose the best type of application program to use in order to solve a problem
8. I can explain the difference between applications packages and other types of software
such as systems software. (I know that word processing, spreadsheets, databases and
graphics packages are different from operating systems like WindowsXP and Mac OSX)

I can decide the hardware and software needed to use an application package by checking the
information on the manufacturer’s documentation, magazine adverts or web sites, e.g.
9. I can spot which input device(s) a program might need
(including mouse, keyboard, graphics tablet, touchpad, scanner and digital camera)
10. I can spot which output device(s) a package or program might need
(including printer and monitor)
11. I can spot which backing storage device(s) a package or program might need
(including floppy disk, hard disk, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD devices and USB Flash drive)
12. I can work out how much storage capacity a package or program might need;
(bit, byte, Kb, Mb, Gb, Tb)
13. I can work out what size of RAM capacity a program might need, e.g. 512MB
14. I can work out how fast the processor speed needs to be for a program, e.g. 1.2GHz
15. I can work out what operating system program might be needed, including the name and
version, eg Microsoft Windows XP or Mac OSX v10.3

Topic 2 : Word processing (use an appropriate text application package:)

1. I can edit text:insert new text, amend text to be changed and delete unwanted text.
2. I can format text to set the font, size, style and colour),
I can justify text to set the line or paragraph to left, right, full or centre
3. I can use bullet points to make lists clear
4. I can format a page by setting the margin widths, tab stops, header and footer text
5. I can add graphics such as clip art, photos and other graphics
6. I can use the text wrap feature to make words flow around an object like a graphic
7. I can use cut, copy and paste to move and duplicate text
8. I can use search and replace (find and change) to swap one text block for another
9. I can carry out a spell check to help locate and remove spelling errors
10. I can give the advantages and disadvantages of word processing over handwriting on
paper
11. I can give the advantages and drawbacks of a spell checker including use of the dictionary
12. I can give examples of personal and work-related uses of word processing
13. I can describe how handwriting recognition is used to enter text
14. I can describe how optical character recognition (OCR) is used to enter text
15. I can describe how voice recognition and a microphone are used to enter text
16. I can describe how a touch (sensitive) screen is used to enter text

2. I can edit spreadsheet data: insert, amend and delete numbers, text and formulae
3. I can copy or replicate formulae using fill down or fill right to complete a column or row
4. I can insert and delete rows and columns to add new data or remove unwanted data
5. I can create basic arithmetic formulas using +,-, *, /, for example C2=A2*B2
6. I can use SUM, AVERAGE functions to do list calculations, for example D10=SUM(D2..D9)
7. I can sort spreadsheet data on 1 column to arrange rows in order
8. I can format cells to display currency, decimal places properly,
I can change row height and column width to display data properly
9. I can create a simple chart or graph from a range of spreadsheet cells
10. I can give advantages and disadvantages of spreadsheets over “paper & pencil” methods
11. I can give examples of personal and work-related uses of spreadsheets
12. I can spot the cells that change in a spreadsheet due to formulas calculating results

Topic 4 : Database Use an appropriate data application package:

1. I can design a database with suitable field names such as surname or cost
2. I can choose suitable field types including
text, number, date, time, graphics and calculated
3. I can create a new database file and set up field names and field types from my design
4. I can edit a database (insert, amend and delete both records and fields)
5. I can sort a database on single or multiple fields, (surname only or surname and forename)
6. I can search on single or multiple fields, TOWN=Polbeth, TOWN=Polbeth AND YEAR=4
7. I can give advantages and disadvantages of an electronic database over paper databases
8. I can use the database terms: field, record and file correctly
9. I can give examples of personal and work-related use of a database

Topic 5 : Graphics Use a drawing (vector) package and a painting (bit mapped) package

I can create and work with a graphic in both a draw and in a paint package
1. I can use the follwing tools to paint or draw shapes
rectangle, ellipse, line and freehand
2. I can use the text tool to paint or draw words or labels in a graphic
