BIO 252 Physiology

Course objective:

A highlight of the basic physiological and processes of homeostasis that go on in the human
body. Emphasis will be given, where appropriate, on how diseased states may affect
homeostasis.

What we expect from you:

In this course we expect you to learn to think and discuss rather than just memorize the text-
book info. You may also be examined on materials discussed during the class in addition to
the text-book. Please also make sure you have a working email account and access to
ODTUClass as soon as the classes start.

Weekly schedule:

Week 1 Introduction to the Nervous System (Chapter 8, 9, Kiriş)


Week 2 Sensory Physiology (Chapter 10, Kiriş)
Week 3 Autonomic Nervous System (Chapter 11, Kiriş)
Midterm (5.4.2021, Monday) (17:30-19:00PM)
Week 4-5 Brief overview of Endocrine system, Endocrine Control of Growth and Metabolism
(Chapters 7, 22 and 23, Muyan)
Weeks 6-7 Reproductive Physiology (Chapter 26, Muyan)
Midterm (7.5.2021, Friday) (17:30-19:00PM)
Week 8 Muscles (Chapter 12, Banerjee)
Week 9 Cardiovascular Physiology (Chapter 14, Banerjee)
Week 10 Control of Blood Pressure, Blood and Lymphatic system (Chapter 15, 16, Banerjee)
Week 11 Mechanics of breathing and gas exchange (Chapter 17, 18, Banerjee)
Week 12 The kidneys, fluid and electrolyte balance (Chapter 19, 20, Banerjee)
Week 13 Digestive system (Chapter 21, Banerjee)
Final Exam

Important points:
1. Exams will consist of a mixture of essay type questions, true false, fill the blanks and
multiple choice questions (60% for two midterm exams, 40% for final exam)
2. Active participation in the lecture is requested.
3. Make-up exams are given only in case of unavoidable circumstances. Please make sure that
you have proper internet connection and your laptop is charged before an exam.
4. Owing to the class size students getting CC, DC and DD will not be allowed to take the
course again to improve their grade.
