Q. If you were asked to unload a 747 full of jellybeans, what would you do?
Calculate the time and the expected cost?

If I am asked to unload a 747 full of jellybeans, It would depend on the situation at hand
totally. There will be multiple factors affecting my decision, such as are there any time
constraints or how many jellybeans are there in total. Is the 747 landed on the runway or in
the air? Do I have to manually unload the jellybeans or are there any resources to help me do
the task? Will I have to face budget restrictions? Then, I will also have to look if the
jellybeans are spread all over the aircraft or are there box-full of jellybeans.
I will assume that I have to unload the 747 within 6 hours while still in the air with as many
human-resources as I want. So, If a laborer takes around 10 hours to unload the 1500
kilograms of jellybeans, I will hire at least 2 to get the task done within the given time with
an equal division of the weight (750 Kgs) of jellybeans on both the men.
The 747 will be directed toward the area of less-privileged people, a nearby village so that the
jellybeans can be unloaded. After that, the hired men will start unboxing the jellybeans and
unloading.

Time Taken:
Since there are two men at work, they will work to unload the jellybeans in the given times.
Each man will have the following share of the jellybeans to unload:
1500kgs/2 = 750 Kgs
Each man will have to unload 750 Kgs.

In one hour:
1500/10= 150kgs of jellybeans will be unloaded by one
man. So, in one-hour jellybeans unloaded by both =
2(150)= 300kgs

Total Time:
So, 300Kgs *5 hours = 1500 Kgs of jellybeans in 5 hours

Adding Miscellaneous Time:

-Other than that the unboxing, taking off and landing will take about 1 hour.
So, 5 hours + 1 hour = 6 hours (Job Completed)
Cost Expected

One of the most important costs that we have to take into account is the opportunity cost,
which is $500 in this case.

per Labor Wage = $200/

hour Fuel Cost = $1000/
hour
Pilot Fees =$100,000/ flight
Miscellaneous Costs(food and uniform)
=$50000

Total expected cost (minus the opportunity cost) =

[(200*5)*2]+(1000*5)+100,000+50,000

= 2000 + 5000 +100,000+ 50,000

=$ 1,570,000
Adding the opportunity cost 1, 570, 000 + 500 = $ 1,570, 500

Total Expected Cost = $ 1,570, 500

So it is estimated that it will take me 6 hours and around $ 1,570,500 to unload the
jellybeans onto a nearby village.
