OMICRON PTL Siemens 7UT8x V7.80 Transformer PTT User Manual

1. General
This user manual describes details of testing 7UT8x relays with the OMICRON Protection Test Template
(PTT). General information on the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library items can be found in
the OMICRON PTL user manual.

The template has been tested with the following relay:

Manufacturer: SIEMENS
Model: 7UT87
Firmware Version: 7.80

1.1 Supported Relays

The following relays can be tested with the Protection Test Template:
• 7UT82
• 7UT85
• 7UT86
• 7UT87 (only two- or three-winding transformer applications supported)

2. Software and Hardware Requirements

To use this template, you must have a valid test license for the OMICRON Test Universe 3.20 software or
higher versions and the following test modules:
• Control Center
• Diff Configuration
• Diff Trip Time Characteristic
• Diff Operating Characteristic
• Diff Harmonic Restraint
• Overcurrent
• Pulse Ramping
• Ramping
• State Sequencer

A CMC test set with six current outputs is required. A CMA 156 current amplifier may be additionally
required for testing with higher currents e.g. relays with 5A current measuring inputs.

3. Hardware
There are multiple possibilities of wiring a 7UT8x relay to a CMC test set. The advised connections for
testing side 1 and 2 are shown in Figure 1 and for side 1 and 3 in Figure 2. These connections are the
default settings in the Hardware Configuration of the PTT.

Hardware Configuration for Overcurrent Protection, Ground (IN-separate)

For testing a ground-fault overcurrent protection with a residual current measured by a separate current
transformer (IN-separate), please change the connections according to the advised connections in Figure
3 for ground-fault overcurrent protection side 1, Figure 4 for ground-fault overcurrent protection side 2 and
Figure 5 for ground-fault overcurrent protection side 3.

5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object already contains the Siemens 7UT8x XRIO Converter, which includes setting
parameters of the modelled protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the DIGSI 5
software.

5.1 Additional Information

5.1.1 Relay Information

The Relay Information block contains relay specific parameters. It includes the tolerances which can be
found in the 7UT8x relay manual and are required for testing. Please adjust the type of the relay output
(Standard Relay (Type S), Fast Relay (Type F) or High-Speed Relay with Semiconductor
Acceleration (Type HS)) to get appropriate tolerance times. Typically, the parameters in the specific
blocks don't have to be changed, as the parameters are already set to the values given in the user manual
of the relay.

5.1.2 Transformer Information

The Transformer Information block includes the parameter Number of Sides, which states whether the
protected object is a two- or three-winding transformer. The parameter has to be set before testing.

6. Specific Protection Tests

In this chapter the specific protection tests, which are not covered by the OMICRON PTT User Manual,
are described.

6.1 Differential Protection – Harmonic Restraint Test

The Diff Harmonic Restraint test module is used to check the correct relay behavior of the harmonic
restraint of the differential protection. Three currents are required for this test, which is carried out on
transformer side 1. For the test a search line is placed at Idiff = 1.3 × Iref. Additional search lines can be
added by the user.
