in this video we're gonna talk about

fractions and I want you to understand

the concept of a fraction using visual

illustrations so let's say if we have a

circle let me draw a better looking

circle and let's split a circle into two

equal parts now I'm going to shade only

one portion of those two parts so what

fraction of the circle is shaded so

there's two parts of the circle and only

one of those two parts is shaded so we

could say that one half of the circle is

shaded now let me give you another

example

let's say if I have a circle and I split

it into four equal parts

and I'm gonna shade

this part of the circle so what fraction

of the circle is shaded so there's four

equal parts of the circle and three of

those four parts were shaded so

three-fourths of the circle is shape now

let me give you another illustration so

let's say we have a circle again and

this time I'm going to divide a circle

into eight equal parts

[Music]

so what fraction of the circle is shaded

so we know that there's eight parts the

circle was divided into eight equal

parts and only three of those eight

parts were shaded so three-eighths of

the circle is shaded and so hopefully

these visual illustrations help you to

understand the concept of a fraction

which is basically a portion out of a

whole now here's another example view so

let's say we have a rectangle and it's

broken up into seven congruent parts now

grant said my drawing is not perfect but

we'll make it work

now let's say three of those parts is

shaded what fraction of the rectangle is

shaded and what fraction it's not shaded

so this seven equal parts and three of

those seven parts are shaded so we could

say three sevenths of the rectangle is

shaded now out of this total seven parts

four of those seven parts is not shaded

so 4/7 of the rectangle remains

unshaded or not shaded

now let's look at another example so

let's say

we have a square and we're gonna break

up the square into a total of eight

parts

what fraction of the square is not

cheating and what fraction is shaded so

out of the eight parts five of those

parts is shame so we can say that 5/8 of

the rectangle or rather of the square is

shaded

now what fraction is not shaded out of

the total eight parts three parts is not

shaded and so hopefully these visual

illustrations help you to a solidify the

concept of a fraction so here's a

practice problem for you draw a circle

and shade only two fifths of the circle

so feel free to pause the video so

here's a circle and we'll need to break

it up into five equal parts so that's

gonna be one we'll say two three four

and five so once you split it into five

parts all you need to do is shade two of

those five parts and so in this case two

fifths of the circle has been shaded and

so that's basically it for this video so

now you understand fractions with

circles and squares and rectangles so

that's basically it for this video and

if you need help with adding or

subtracting fractions or even

multiplying and dividing fractions I'm

gonna post a few links in the

description section of this video so you

can take a look at that when you get a

chance thanks for watching
