in this video we're going to talk about

sensors so what I have here is some

batteries I'm only using three out of

the six volts got a light bulb here and

a reed switch so let's see what happens

if I put this magnet close to it as you

can see the light bulb turns on the reed

switch acts as a magnetic sensor when

it's very close to a strong magnetic

field it'll turn the circuit on now let

me use a different type of magnet

this one works better it looks like at a

distance a good distance it turns to

read switch on

now let's talk about the operation of a

Reese which in a circuit so here we have

a circuit with a three volt battery and

a light bulb which is in the off state

when there's no magnet present or close

to the Reese which the metal contacts

inside the reed switch are not attached

to each other as you can see there is

some space in between those two metal

contacts highlighted in red so therefore

what we have is a short circuit no

current is flowing in a circuit and

that's why the light bulb is off now

once we place a magnet close to the

Reese which the two metal contacts that

you see here they're going to attach to

each other they're going to make contact

so once they conduct the circuit is no

longer a short circuit what we have is a

closed circuit so therefore conventional

current will flow from the positive

terminal the battery through the light

bulb thus putting it in the on state

through the read switch and back to the

negative terminal and so that's the

basic operation of a reed switch in a

presence of a magnetic field the two

metal contacts they connect allowing or

turn in the circuit on
