Lesson 4: The Book of

Genesis – Cain and Abel

The Book of Genesis narrates
that after Adam and Eve were
driven away from the garden in
Eden they had their firstborn
son, Cain (Gen. 4:1).
Genesis 4:1

And Adam knew Eve his wife;

and she conceived, and bore
Cain, and said, I have gotten a
man from the LORD.
Their second son was Abel (Gen. 4:2).

And she again bore his brother Abel.

And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but
Cain was a tiller of the ground.
Gen. 1:27-28 - since they were instructed to
multiply and fill the earth they continue to
bear children.
They had many sons and daughters but only three
names were mentioned in the Bible: Cain, Abel
and Seth, who looked like Adam (Gen. 5:3-4)

5:3) And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years,

and begot a son in his own likeness, after his
image; and called his name Seth:
5:4) And the days of Adam after he had begotten
Seth were eight hundred years: and he begot sons
and daughters:
Cain brought an offering to God from his
harvest, the fruits of the ground but God did
not accept it because Cain was wicked.

1 John 3:12 Not as Cain, who was of that

wicked one, and slew his brother. And
wherefore slew he him? Because his own
works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
Abel also brought his offering to God from the
firstlings and fats of his flock and God
accepted it.

Gen. 4:3 And in process of time it came to

pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the
ground an offering unto the LORD.
Gen.4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the
firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof.
And the LORD had respect unto Abel.
Cain became angry and full of envy and when
they were in the field he murdered his brother,
Abel .
(Gen. 4:5-8).
5. But unto Cain and to his offering he had
not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and
his countenance fell and to his offering:
6. And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art
thou wroth? and why is thy countenance
fallen?
4:7) If thou doest well, shalt thou not be
accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at
the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and
thou shalt rule over him.

4:8) And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it

came to pass, when they were in the field, that
Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew
him.
God cursed Cain and he became a fugitive and vagabond in
the earth.

Gen. 4:14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from
the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I
shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall
come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
4:15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever
slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.
And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him
should kill him.
He went to the land of Nod with his wife,
who was most probably one of his sisters.

Gen. 4:16-17

LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east
of Eden.

and bore Enoch: and he built a city, and called the
