Module 1. I. INTRODUCTION
At the end of the topic, the students must have:
 defined important terms essential to plant growth
 memorized special terms essential in understanding plant growth

What I Know
1. Plant physiology is concerned with the a plant.
2. It is the study of the plant.
3. Plant physiology which involve the plant life processes like ¸ ¸
¸ ¸ and ¸
4. The most important plant life process which transforms light energy into chemical energy.
5. The disadvantage to plant caused by environmental changes.

A. Overview and significance of the course

In agriculture and agroforestry and with other sciences involved in food production, plant physiology is an
important topic relating to fruits, vegetables, trees, and other consumable parts of plants. The production of food
crops also hinges on the study of plant physiology relating to optimal planting and harvesting time and post-
harvest storage of plant products for human consumption and the production of secondary products like drugs
and cosmetics.
Plant physiology is a biological science concerned with the general patterns governing the life processes
of plants. It is descriptive of variation and structure of plants at the molecular and cellular level leading to
ecological, physiological, and biochemistry related studies of plant exploration.
The interdisciplinary research field focuses on the analysis of different processes in the plant such as
photosynthesis, mineral nutrition, respiration, transportation, and plant growth and development.
Classical researches carry out in the field through vegetation pot, solarium, greenhouses, and
laboratories which uses diverse methods using high-tech equipment.

Sciences related to Plant physiology

 Botany – the study of plants
 Plant morphology – a study on the structure of the plant.
 Plant ecology – the interaction of plant to its environment.
 Phytochemistry – studies the plant's chemistry.
B. Terminologies
 Photosynthesis- is a process used by plants to convert light into chemical energy that can be released
to fuel the activity of the organism.
 Respiration – metabolic process in cells leading to the production of energy by the breakdown of
organic substances internal respiration.
 Tropism – the involuntary response of an organism or one of its parts toward or away from a stimulus
such as heat or light.
 Photoperiodism – the influence of the daily cycle of light and darkness on the physiology and behavior
of an organism.
 Environmental stress – is the deviation of environmental condition that exerts disadvantageous
influence on the plant.
