CHAPTER 1

The Problem and its Background

Introduction

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) had a very large impact in all

aspects of human life. It lessens the people’s interaction with others like going to malls,

schools, etc. Amidst this COVID-19 pandemic, education is one of the important things

that every student must have because it can lead a person to a better and successful

life. The teaching and learning environment is embracing a number of innovations and

some of these involve the use of technology through blended learning. The use of

technology as made of learning has been a common practice and issue in this time of

uncertainty. This innovative pedagogical approach has been embraced rapidly though it

goes through a process. As far as getting the hang of, learning efficiency is critical to

each understudy so they can see the improvement of every understudies.

Learning efficiency can be define as a measure of improvement in performance

accuracy and speed per amount of learning time Moran and Malott (2004). It can be

measured by using a minimum of resources to achieve a desired result in the learning

process. There was a significant difference between groups in perceived learning

efficiency, favoring the online instructional modality. Limitations regarding this study are

noted, particularly related to the research design. Additional studies examining levels of

learning and perceived efficiency of students enrolled in online courses are

recommended Smith (2015). Moreover blended learning class has better learning

efficiency, the agreement rate was significantly higher in the students (80.3%) from the

dental schools that did not suspend face-to-face education activities than in the students

(50.3%) from the dental school that was shut down Chang (2021). According to

Kurniawan (2019) based on the results of application acceptance test by students of

Faculty of Communication and Informatics Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta

known as many as 87% of respondents agreed that the application determinants of

learning modalities preference can present information and determine the preferences

of learning modalities, easy to use and looks interesting.

The research will be conducted at Rogationist College High School Department

from August 2021- May 2022. According to the school’s own philosophy, Rogationist

College is committed to the formation of their students’ wellbeing. Rogationist College

have the responsibility to build up their students’ wellbeing. The vision of the school,

Rogationist College is dedicated to the formation of culturally competent and socially

responsible students. This will help the researchers in knowing how the school

influences and boosts their student’s learning efficiency.

The aim of this research is to clarify the learning efficiency of the students as

perceived by the Grade 10 male and female students. The researchers chose their

grade 10 students as their respondents because according to

Statement of the Problem

This research was conducted to determine the Student’s learning efficiency as

perceived by grade 10 students of Rogationist College Junior High school S.Y. 2021-

2022.

Specifically, the researchers sought for the following:

1. What is the demographic profile of the students in terms of gender?

2. How does rogationist college conduct online classes in terms of

 learning content

 delivery of lessons

 subjects/activities

3. What is the perception of the grade 10 students on learning efficiency in terms

of?

3.1 Self-organization

3.2 Environment

3.3 Attitudes towards online learning

3.4 Experimental skill

4. Is there a significant difference the perception of grade 10 male and female

student’s learning efficiency?

FIGURE 1. Paradigm of the study

The paradigm shows the variables that the researchers considered in this study.

The input is the profile which is gender, learning content, delivery of lessons, and

subjects/activities of preference of study grade 10 students. The process, on the other

hand is an integrated survey whereas it determines the respondents. Lastly, the output

is the Students' Learning Efficiency as perceived by the Grade 10 students of

Rogationist College S.Y. 2021-2022.

Significance of the study

Students. Through this research, they will be aware on their learning efficiency in

school. This will also help them to improve their performance and skills in learning.
Teacher. Through this research, they will become aware in teaching style on that

learning efficiency. This will also help them to adjust in their teaching methods.

Guidance counselors. This research may give them more objects on counseling

seminars or webinars regards students learning efficiency or perceptions

School. Through this research, the school will be aware on the students learning

efficiency and encourage them to maintain it. With this, they can help improve the

performance of their students.

Scope and Delimitation

The aim of this study is to determine the students learning efficiency as

perceived by the Grade 10 Male and Female students of RCJHS S.Y. 2021-2022. This

study will be conducted during August 2021 – May 2022. The research will be

conducted at Rogationist College High School Department. The researchers will only

cover the students learning efficiency in terms of Self-organization abilities in general,

Self-organization, during covid-19 semester, Environment, Attitudes towards online

learning, and Experimental skills. However, the study will not cover other aspects of

learning efficiency such as Student’s IQ and Academic Performance.

Definition of Terms
Covid-19. Coronaviruses are a type of virus. There are many different kinds, and some

cause disease. A coronavirus identified in 2019, SARS-CoV-2, has caused a pandemic

of respiratory illness, called COVID-19.

Learning efficiency. Learning efficiency is a measure of improvement in performance

accuracy and speed per amount of learning time. Performance improvement is the

improvement in a learner's accuracy and speed as a result of that learner's interaction

with a learning program. Learning efficiency is a measure of academic progress that

takes into account both performance improvement and the student's learning time

Moran and Malott (2004).

Learning environment. Refers to the diverse physical locations, contexts, and cultures

in which students learn.

Perception. Perception is the sensory experience of the world. It involves both

recognizing environmental stimuli and actions in response to these stimuli Cherry

(2020).

Pedagogical approach. The meaning of pedagogical approach enables the individuals

to generate awareness in terms of teaching strategies Kapur (2014)

Self-organization. Self-organization is the emergence of pattern and order in a system

by internal processes, rather than external constraints or forces. Global features often

emerge by self-organization involving local interactions between individuals. Ecological

examples range from the structure of animal social groups to spatial patterns associated
with plant distributions. They include flocking behavior, formation of ant colonies, and

stability of food webs Green (2008) .
