What is globalization?

Globalization is the process by

which ideas, goods, and services spread
throughout the world. In business,
the term is often used in an economic
context to describe an integrated economy
marked by free trade, the free flow of
capital and corporate use of foreign labor
markets to maximize returns and benefit the
common good.

What are the

manifestations of
globalization in the
field of service,

Globalization has affected all facets of the world, even different fields. This includes the
field of service, technology, information and investments. Cited below are the manifestations of
globalization in the aforementioned field. This also includes examples for a more comprehensive
way of elucidating the manifestation of the said economic phenomenon.
A. Manifestation of Globalization in Service

Not too long ago, services are just available in a certain area however, due to the rapid
flow of modernization, this sector has been manifested by the economic phenomenon called
globalization. Services become traded from one nation to another. This is due to the fact that
countless organizations rely on outside call centers, legal teams, fulfillment centers, engineering
teams, and myriad other services providers to deliver their full workforce needs. This includes
the following services:
A. Business and Professional Services
 Financial & Accounting services
 Advertising services
 Architectural and Engineering Services
 Information Technology Services
 Legal Services
B. Communication Services
 Audiovisual Services
 Postal and Courier Services
 Telecommunications
D. Construction and related services
E. Distribution Services
F. Educational Services
G. Energy Services
H. Environmental Services
I. Health and Social Services
J. Tourism Services
K. Transport Service

One great example of the

manifestation of globalization in the
field of service is the emergence of
outsourcing especially business
processing outsourcing (BPO). BPO is a
subset of outsourcing that involves
contracting the operations and
responsibilities for a particular business
process to a third party service provider.
This can add to the economic
development of a struggling country,
bringing much needed jobs. If a
powerful organization is able to
outsource its call center to a developing
country, that creates a new class of jobs
for people who may not have had the
opportunity otherwise.
In a nutshell, globalization in
services can create job for people
especially in the third world countries
thus, it can have a direct effect on the
economy particularly the GDP of that
certain nation where workers have been
sourced.

B. Manifestation of Globalization in Technology

Same through with the manifestation of globalization in the service sector, the
technology globalization has also paved its way. Cited below are the examples of how
globalization manifests the said field:

 The internet is a major contributor to globalization, not only technologically but in

other areas as well like the cultural exchanges of art. Consider how we can enroll in
online educational programs from anywhere in the world and access new information
on virtually any topic.
 Professional service, such as banking IT services have been precursors in establishing
a global delivery models.
 Business increasingly depend on outside firm and cloud providers to manage data and
technology.
 Innovations in telecommunications, information technology and computing have
lowered communication costs and facilitated the cross-border flow of ideas, including
technical knowledge.
 Global new networks like CNN, contribute to the spread of knowledge. Worldwide
news is reported almost instantly, if not via live broadcast, then through continual
updates to online news outlets.
 Cellphones connect people all over the world like never before. There are a multitude
of platforms through which people can communicate too, including Facebook,
Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and the like.
 Manufacturers of machines across the globe produced highly modernized equipments
that makes job more convenient and easier thus making the work efficient and
effective but had adverse effect to people seeking for job. Although these
technologies can maximize profit and expenses on inputs, job seekers will suffer for
these machines don’t need manual assistance.
 Some automobiles and machines being assembled in the United States may import
parts from other countries like Japan, Germany or Korea. This creates a whole new
avenue for trade, when the United States has to pay for certain parts from around the
world, wait for them to be shipped and then resume localized production.
 Business transactions have been done online reducing transportation fees and other
miscellaneous expenses of firms due to that said errand.
 In the current context, amid the pandemic, COVID 19 testing machines produced by
certain manufacturers have been distributed and purchased all around the world thus,
harnessing the containment of the virus.
It can be inferred from the examples above that globalization accelerates the change of
technology. The stiffer the competition among foreign firms, the more advanced the technology
should be especially in gadgets and software.

C. Manifestation of Globalization in Investment

One can trace the manifestation of globalization in investment through the increasing number of
foreign companies emerging in a certain nation. However, the effect of this phenomenon is
adverse especially to locally established businesses that this foreign company rivals with. One
example of this is the establishment of multinational and transnational corporations across the
globe. Say for instance, corporations and companies like Toyota, Lenovo, McDo, Burger King
and other foreign corporation are rivaling the local companies in the Philippines. Although this
investment in a form of business contributes to the tax collected and give jobs to some Filipino, it
is undeniable that the effect to local firms will be bad.
Another example of the manifestation of
globalization in investment is the availability of
foreign products to a certain nation. This is the same
as to the emergence of different transnational and
multi-national corporations. People in a certain area
will not purchase their local products rather, they’ll
choose the imported ones thus, local producer’s sales
will decrease. This can create a domino effect in the
economy. The more the imported goods are, the
bigger the chance local producers will be left out in
the competition.
Aside from those, another example where one
can see the manifestation of globalization in
investment is through integrated banking system.
This can allow capital to flow over borders. For
example, a retiree in Spain who can instantly buy and
sell stocks in an Australian company.
To sum it up, manifestation of globalization in
investment has two effects, it can be good in terms of
increasing the connection to other companies, tax
increase collected, jobs will be given to those local
residents who seek for such but it can be bad in a
way that local firms won’t be able to catch up with
the competition to these kind of companies.
D. Manifestation of globalization in information

Arguably, the manifestation of

globalization in information can be
seen in the current situation of the
world amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Globalization can speed up the spread
of information like accessibility of the
research findings conducted by
scientists all around the world about
the virus and how it affects the body.
The convenience in accessing the said
information is due to globalization
through joint research conducted by
different labs and pharmaceutical
companies.
Globalization in information
goes hand in hand with technology.
The more advance the technology
which is due to the pressure put by
globalization, the easier the
transmission of information across the
globe will be. The spread of information around the world is not only determined by technology
but also the international relation built up by globalization among countries. Here comes the
censorship and information deprivation to countries who are not into globalization. There are
cases that those nations who do not allow foreign companies to do business in their territory are
deprived to know the information these companies have and so as their back-up firms. Lastly, the
availability of information is affected by globalization in the way that rival companies do not
share to the public what documents they have due to the reason that it might become the cause
for their rival to be one step ahead of them especially if the competition among these companies
is stiff. In a nutshell, one can see the manifestation of globalization in information through the
speed of the spread of information using technology due to the pressure set by globalization and
also the availability of information due to the relationship of each country built by globalization.
