I. Parts of the Microscope, their Classification and Functions.

List the different parts of the microscope, gives its classification and
function.

PARTS CLASSIFICATION FUNCTION

Ocular Lens Magnifying It is used for magnifying the image and it
is the closest to eye when using the
microscope.
Body Tube Mechanical/Supporting It is a separation between the ocular lens
and the objectives which helps with the
alignment for the optics.
Arm Mechanical/Supporting It is a support for both the tube and the
base.
Revolving Mechanical/Supporting It is used to hold the objectives for easy
Nosepiece change of power.
Objectives Magnifying It is used to magnify the image and it is
the part closest the specimen.
Stage Clips Mechanical/Supporting It is used to move the slide to view
various parts of the specimen.
Diaphragm Illuminating It helps control the amount of light enter
the specimen.
Light Source Illuminating It is used in reflecting light directly to the

diaphragm, to the specimen. To make the

image be visible.
Stage Mechanical/Supporting It is a part wherein it supports the slides.
Coarse Mechanical/Supporting It has a rapid control, and is used for the
Adjustment initial focusing of the specimen.
Knob
Fine Mechanical/Supporting It has a slow but precise control, and is
Adjustment used to fine focus the specimen with high
Knob powered magnification.
Base Mechanical/Supporting It helps hold the light source for stable
illumination for the specimen.

1. Compare the specimen seen in the virtual microscope using 4x magnification

with the specimen seen at 100x magnification.
Comparing the specimen seen in 4x magnification and 100x magnification, 4x
magnification of the specimen makes it look big and most parts of the specimen can

be seen, while using the 100x magnification, it makes us see the smaller parts of the
specimen which cannot be seen with lower power magnification.

2. What is the importance of using an immersion oil in 100x magnification?

Its importance is that, when using the immersion oil, it helps the 100x
magnification have better lighting of the specimen, which means better image
quality.

3. Describe the changes in the field of view and the amount of available light when
going from low to high power using the compound microscope.
The changes in the field of view are big, from seeing almost the whole specimen,
up to see only a specific part of the specimen. Using a low power magnification, it
usually needs lesser light to view the specimen. But with higher power of
magnification, it needs more light to be viewed.

4. Give some limitations in the use of microscope.

One limitation of the use of microscope is that, it is very dependent on light. Without
light, viewing specimens would be impossible.

CONCLUSION
Using the microscope is very amazing, it allows us to see things on a bigger scale. It is
truly a very important tool in science, that enables us to view and understand things that
cannot be done with just our naked eyes.
