THE AUTHOR: ANTONIO PIGAFETTA
• (1491 – c.1534), born in Vicenza, Venice, Italy
• In younger years, worked in the ships owned by
the Knights of Rhodes;
• Studied ASTRONOMY, GEOGRAPHY, and
CARTOGRAPHY
• Biographers described him as well-educated
young man possessing an avid curiosity of the
world around him;
• When joined as part of the delegation of
Monsignor Francesco Chieregati and assigned
in Spain in 1519, knew about the spice trades
and the Magellan’s plan of exploration.
THE AUTHOR: ANTONIO PIGAFETTA
• Applied to join in Magellan’s Expedition,
presented his credentials to the Casa de la
Contratacion
• Admitted as one of the sobresalientes
(supernumeraries)
• Was among the 18 survivors who returned to
Spain on September 6, 1522
• Submitted a written report to his Majesty King
Carlos V before returning to Italy
• Only few accounts were taken about him after
the expedition;

• Pigafetta kept a journal of the expedition’s
happenings;
• Prepared a publication of his accounts;
presented the draft to Pope Clement VII,
Philippe de Villiers L’Isle-Adam and Louis of
Savoy for financial assistance, but got no
support
• 1536 – a condensed version of the manuscript
was published in Venice by Jacques Fabre;
• The Original manuscript did not survived;
• English Version – 1819 – James Alexander
Robertson – appeared in The Philippine Islands
opus (Vol. 33)

• Presented the individual fates of the five ships,

Trivia
Magellan approached King Manuel of Portugal on 3
separate occasions to seek his support for a
westward voyage to the Spice Islands. The king
refused his petition repeatedly.
THE EXPLORER: FEJUAN SEBASTIAN
ELCANO
• Born: Guetaria, Spain
• Charge: King Charles I
• Flagship: Victoria
• Known: Leading the second half of first
round-the-world navigation.

Trivia
Upon his return to Spain, the King presented him
with a coat of arms that contained a globe and the
phrase: Primus circumdedisti me (in Latin, "You went
around me first").

Name: Cilapulapu
Lapulapu
Known for: Chief of Mactan; First Filipino Hero

Trivia
According to a folk epic taken from the oral histories
of the region called the Aginid, Bayok sa atong
Tawarik, when Lapulapu arrived from Borneo
(Sabah), he asked Rajah Humabon for an area he and
his people could settle in.
