MATH ACTIVITY -2
RELATIONS AND FUNCTIONS
OBJECTIVE
To demonstrate a function which is not one-one but is onto.
MATERIAL REQUIRED
Paper, color pencils, pencil, ruler.
METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION
1. Cut a rectangle from a white sheet of paper. Paste the rectangle on the plain page.
2. In the rectangle mark three points and name them 1, 2 and 3.
3. Cut another rectangle and paste it next to the previous one. Mark two points on it and name them a and b.
4. Join the points on the two rectangles with lines as shown in the figure below.

DEMONSTRATION
1. Take the set 𝑋 = {1, 2, 3}
2. Take the set 𝑌 = {𝑎, 𝑏}
3. Join elements of X to elements of Y as shown in Fig 3.3.
OBSERVATION
1. The image of the element 1 of X in Y is _________.
The image of the element 2 of X in Y is _________.
The image of the element 3 of X in Y is _________.
2. Does Fig 3.3 represents a function? YES/NO
3. Is the function one-one? Justify.

4. Is the function onto? Justify.

APPLICATION
This activity can be used to demonstrate the concept of one-one and onto function.
