The Fence - Jose Garcia Villa
He introduced the reversed consonance rime scheme, including the comma poems that made full
use of the punctuation mark in an innovative, poetic way. The first of his poems “Have Come,
Am Here” received critical recognition when it appeared in New York in 1942
He won the 1973 National Artist of the Philippines for literature. His work in both poetry and

SETTINGS (the fence)
Old house on the roadside, so brown were the nipa leaves that walled and roofed them that they
looked musty, gloomy
The setting is reflective of the kind of characters and the situation they would be in. The nipa huts
look desolate and empty, reflective of how their occupants behave and feel for each other. They
have no neighbors and yet the need for each other seems remote and distant.
