Narrator: (Assess the scene: Quickly check the area for safety hazard, you can’t help anyone if
you become a victim yourself)
Ruz: Let’s move her away from the cars that are driving by.
Dispatcher: Scan the victim from head to abdomen for breathing. Your ear is going to be near
her mouth..your eyes are going to observing her chest rises and falls. Do you hear her gasping?
Gurgling?
Narrator: Check the victim for breathing NO more than 10 seconds:
Ruz: No I don’t hear anything… Her chest isn’t rising either!
Dispatcher: You need to perform CPR!, Okay Ruz, I need you to find her sternum.
Narrator: To find the sternum, draw a line with your hand, from the armpit to the center of the
chest.
Ruz: Okay, found it.
Dispatcher: Place the heel of your hand on the lower half of the sternum. And then place the
other hand over the first. Interlace your fingers. Okay. Now, straighten your arms and position
your shoulders over her chest.
Ruz:Okay, got it!
Dispatcher. Use your body weight to push the chest down about 2 inches..You will do 100
compressions for a minute. Count out loud! Start!
Ruz: (Counting out loud the number of chest compressions). (STAYING ALIVE SONG)
Dispatcher: Rain, or someone who is there, finds a piece of cloth to use for mouth to mouth
resuscitation.
Ulrika: (waves a handkerchief) I have a handkerchief
Ruz: …..96, 97, 98, 99, 100…
Narrator: Rescue Breathing
Dispatcher: Good job Ruz! Tilt the head back and lift the chin. Pinch her nose closed and place
the handkerchief over mouth. Now, perform mouth to mouth resuscitation. Blow into her mouth
to make the CHEST RISE. Give her 2 rescue breaths. And then start with the compressions
again.
Narrator: Note: If the chest does not rise with the initial rescue breath, re-tilt the head before
delivering the second breath. If the chest doesn't rise with the second breath, the person may
be choking. After each subsequent set of 30 chest compressions, and before attempting
breaths, look for an object and, if seen, remove it.
(Switch)
Ulrika continues to perform cycles of chest compressions and breathing until the EMS arrives.
Narrator: EMS has arrived at the scene. The trained responder arrives and is ready to take
over.
