Emotional Intelligence

1.Self-Awareness

A. Self-Awareness describes your ability to not only understand your strengths and weaknesses,

but to recognize your emotions and the effect they have on you and your team’s performance.

[ CITATION Lan19 \l 1033 ] Self-awareness is the ability to see yourself clearly and objectively

through reflection and introspection.

[ CITATION Ack21 \l 1033 ]

B. It can make us better at our jobs, better communicators in the workplace, and enhance

our self-confidence and job-related wellbeing .[ CITATION Ack21 \l 1033 ]

Self-awareness allows us to see things from the perspective of others, practice self-control, work

creatively and productively, and experience pride in ourselves and our work as well as general

self-esteem [ CITATION Ack21 \l 1033 ]

C. For leaders to bring out the best in others, they first need to bring out the best in themselves,

which is where self-awareness comes into play [ CITATION Lan19 \l 1033 ]

Leaders who are self-aware actively reflect on how their words and actions are perceived by others and

work to change any of their own shortcomings so they can lead their peers more effectively.[CITATION

Edi21 \l 1033 ]

D. I believe I am self-aware, but you would get the same answer from 90% of people.[ CITATION

Lan19 \l 1033 ] Most of the time I am aware of the things I do and say make my coworkers feel. One

thing I could work on at work is being self-aware in heated moments. A lot of times I get frustrated if

someone I work with moves slow and though I do not speak on it, I am aware it shows through my body

language whenever I get angry.

E. One thing I could improve my self-awareness is taking those heated moments to evaluate what is

going on and if it is even worth getting upset about. Also, I could think about if I get upset and display

negative body language, how would it make the people around me react.

2. Self-Regulation

A.  Self-regulation refers to the ability to manage disruptive emotions and impulses. Self-

regulation involves controlling one's behavior, emotions, and thoughts in the pursuit of long-term

goals.[ CITATION Gan21 \l 1033 ]

B. When changes occur leaders can steer clear of judgment, focus on the steps for

implementation, and lead the way by example. It important for leaders to self-regulate because

leaders must have their emotions in check.[ CITATION Gol15 \l 1033 ]

C. A leader could use self-regulation to enhance their integrity. That way, when a chance to

increase personal gain or cut corners arises, they will not give in.[ CITATION Gol15 \l 1033 ]

D. Self-regulation is not allowing your emotions to get the best of you and make you act in an

unprofessional manner. I self-regulate daily at work. However, I do fall short occasionally.

E. When I get angry , I could note what triggers this feeling, and think about why this happens. I

can use techniques such as deep breathing  to calm myself down and give myself time to pause

before I respond.[ CITATION Too21 \l 1033 ]

3.Motivation

A. Motivation is the desire to act in service of a goal. Motivation encompasses the desire to

continue striving toward meaning, purpose, and a life worth living.[ CITATION Sta21 \l 1033 ]

B. In order to motivate the people around you, you must be motivated. “A cheerful attitude

communicates the impression that you have faith in your team, from the emails you send to staff

to how you behave yourself in the break room. That is a tremendously effective instrument for

generating motivation.”[ CITATION Ost21 \l 1033 ]

C. “ Confident, dedicated, and trustworthy leaders know what motivates their team members by

paying close attention to the team’s opinions. Employees who are motivated and actively

engaged in the work their company is doing make for an organization with stronger
output”[ CITATION Dia21 \l 1033 ] Leaders can use their knowledge of what motivates others to put

those individuals in position to help the company.

D. I am a very motivated person. I feel I do a good job motivating myself, but I could do a better

job motivating the people around me.

E. One way to improve motivating those around me is to be a better listener and observer of the

people around me. I also could “boost my motivation levels  by developing self-discipline , and

by looking for and celebrating small wins”[ CITATION Too21 \l 1033 ]

4.Empathy

A. “Empathy is the ability to emotionally understand what other people feel, see things from

their point of view, and imagine yourself in their place”[CITATION Che20 \l 1033 ]. Empathy means

being able to really understand others.

B. “Being empathetic allows leaders to help struggling employees improve and excel. It

encourages leaders to understand the root cause behind poor performance”[ CITATION Nas21 \l

1033 ].

C. “Leaders who take the time to understand the needs of their employees can provide them with

the support they require to press ahead, to deal with the challenges or issues that might be

holding them back from achieving their goals… By understanding and providing employees with

what they need to succeed, leaders can build a sense of trust, thereby strengthening the

relationships they have with their employees and consequently, the relationships employees have
with one another, leading to greater collaboration and improved productivity”[ CITATION Nas21 \l

1033 ].

D. Empathy is something I can improve on. I have empathy for my friends and family, but not

strangers. I really struggle with it, but to be a leader I will have to develop.

E. “One way they do this is by paying more attention to both the verbal and non-verbal cues that

are a part of everyday communication. Making similar efforts will help you shift the focus from

the story that’s in your mind to the actual message that’s being presented”[ CITATION Nas21 \l

1033 ].

5.Social Skills

A. Social Skills refer to your ability to connect with people. Social skills also involve your ability

to communicate and deal with conflict effectively.

B.” Social skills are important because they can help you communicate more effectively and efficiently

and, as a result, help you build, maintain and grow relationships with colleagues, clients and new

contacts. These skills are important to maintain and improve no matter your position, industry or

experience level”[ CITATION Edi211 \l 1033 ]

C. Leaders can use Social Skills to communicate with others to achieve a goal. Leaders can also

use Social Skills to create a more positive environment.

D.I do not connect with unfamiliar people as well as I would like. I feel I need to improve my

Social Skills. Once I have built trust with someone, my Social Skills shine through more.
E. If I put in more effort to connect with my coworkers, I will be able to develop my Social

Skills. I also have an Interpersonal Communication course that will hopefully help me with my

Social Skills as well.
