Description of Business

Denim is a strong cotton fabric made using a twill weave, which creates a subtle diagonal ribbing
pattern. Blue Jeans, also known as Denim now, first invented in the 1800s and were originally made and
manufactured in the French town of Nîmes (bleu de Nîmes). Textiles made during that time were often
named based on where they were first manufactured. They called the material “serge de Nimes” which
means “serge from Nimes”. The fabric became more widely used, English and French merchants
shortened the name to “Denim”. However, the Italian textile workers in Genoa produced a fabric made
with indigo dyed wool and cotton. It is somewhat similar to denim fabric, and was favored among sailors
and other members of working class. They made various types of clothes from denim fabric such as
trousers, overcoats, long dresses, and they called them as “blue jeans”. The term “jean” is a shortened
term for Genoa. Jean and Denim were two distinctive fabrics. In 1848, a man named Levi Strauss
emigrated to the United States from Bavaria. Strauss began working with his brothers wherein they sell
wholesale dry goods such as buttons, threads, and canvas for tents in New York. He soon moved to San
Francisco, which was in the thick of the California gold rush. He began to sell sturdy work pants to the
thousand miners. After two decades of building his business, Strauss began to partner with Jacob Davis
who is a tailor and Davis added copper rivets to the seams and pocket corners, adding strength to the
pants. David and Strauss patented the pants and Strauss began mass producing and marketing them,
helping them evolve from something worn exclusively by working men to a mainstream fashion item. In
mid-19th century in America, jean fabric was used for trousers and overcoats. It has a solid indigo,
brown, or olive color. On the other hand, denim fabric is usually made from both white and indigo yarn.
It is made to create tough workwears for miners, cowboys, mechanics, and farmers that time.

M. Shahbandeh, a US and global researcher of statistica.com specializing in agriculture and fast-

moving consumer goods, on 5th day of August, 2021 published the statistic report of global denim
market. It shows that the denim becomes a staple textile within the global apparel market. In the year of
2020, the market value of denim fabric was 21.8 billion U.S. dollars and expected to increase to over 26
billion U.S. dollars by the year of 2026. It is also projected to reach about 71.8 billion U.S dollars by the
year of 2027 for the denim retail sales value. The global denim jeans market was forecast to be worth
around 87.4 billion U.S. dollars that year. When it comes to international trade, China, as well as the
Hong Kong is the leading exporter of denim fabric worldwide made from at least 85 percent cotton. On
the other hand, the Egypt is the leading importer of denim made from also at least 85 percent cotton.
Levi Strauss, who has the largest brand share of the jeans market with over 4.45 billion U.S. dollars in
sales in 2020. Eighty-seven percent of Levi Strauss’s sales were made through the company’s Levi’s
brand in 2019. Comparing it to the VF Corporation, it has a jean wear sales of 2.1 billion U.S. dollars in
the year of 2020 as well. Van’s revenue grew the most of VF Corporation's brands in 2020. In May of
that year, VF's separated its Jeanswear organization into an independent company called Kontoor
Brands, which includes labels such as Wrangler and Lee. In the U.S market, the most important factors
of the consumers there when purchasing jeans are the fit and comfort of it.
