10/14/2021 Service Learning Journal – Employer Planning Video for Future Learners During the fall semester, I had the opportunity to participate in a departmental project creating educational treatment planing videos. The aim of this project was to improve efficiency and promote independent learning while still providing a high quality, standardized introduction to treatment planning. My clinical site is a large academic institution with numerous learners that rotate through the medical dosimetry department including medical residents, physics residents, medical dosimetry students, and radiation therapy students. Additionally, these treatment planning videos will be used in global health initiative projects in educating learners worldwide. For this project, I signed up to record a video covering several basic concepts within the external beam planning workspace in the Eclipse Treatment Planning System. First, I created an organized outline to include all the components I demonstrated in the video. Next, I prepared various plans within an anonymized testing patient so that I could demonstrate each topic during the video recording. Within the video recording, I demonstrated how to complete the following tasks: insert a plan, set user origin, insert a new field, select a treatment unit and energy, move isocenter, insert reference points, insert the prescription, add multileaf collimation, add a subfield, add a wedge, add bolus to treatment fields, and determining treatment table parameters. These videos will benefit learners by offering an introduction to the treatment planning workspace, contouring tools, and site specific treatment planning techniques. As a medical dosimetry student, I recognize the efficacy and usefulness these videos will provide to a novice medical dosimetry student. In a busy clinical department, it will be beneficial to have these standardized videos available to learn from independently and reference as needed. Furthermore, I feel these videos are helpful due to the live demonstration that is provided. Overall, I believe participating in this departmental project has emphasized my own personal growth and learning over the past several months as a medical dosimetry student. Education is an area I have always been interested in. This project has reinforced and encouraged me to participate in future educational efforts to share my knowledge and understanding of the medical dosimetry field.
