Philippine History Movie # 2

(Quezon’s Game)

Questions:
1. Is the problem to be solved in the film that can be seen in the struggle of the
protagonist against the antagonist familiar to you in any way? If so, describe the
similarities and differences.
2. The personal qualities that help the protagonist solve his or her problem are often
a part of the lesson to be learned in the film. What are these qualities and where have
you seen them in your own experience, either in your own behavior or in behavior of
someone you know?
3. The resolution to the problem in the film can be satisfying or disheartening. Think
about how some of your own problems have been resolved; write about a time when
the solution was satisfying and write about a time when the solution was
disheartening.

Answers:
1. The main problem that will be solved by the protagonist in this film, is not a
problem in where the protagonist fights off the person as an antagonist, this film does
not hold a person as an antagonist, it’s more about social conflict, problems caused
by person (Hitler) who is unaware of the protagonists actions (Manuel Quezon), and I
think this event was somehow similar through my experiences getting helping others
before. Somehow like Manuel L. Quezon in the film, I strived to help others by
volunteering in outreach programs, while Manuel Quezon strived to help the Jews
who are about to be killed, the only main difference I can see is that the help from
Manuel Quezon is much more dangerous. Because he’s risking the safety of the
Filipinos in that time.

2. A few of the personal qualities Manuel Quezon have was being sympathetic,
heroic, and he took action and showed love when everyone else wasn’t doing anything
about it. I saw this attitude within myself because I always took the first step in doing
right thing, even when no one’s doing it, or supporting me as I do it. Because I always
believed that I should always do the right thing, because this act of selflessness is for
the greater good.
The resolution to the problem in the film can be satisfying or disheartening. Think
about how some of your own problems have been resolved; write about a time when
the solution was satisfying and write about a time when the solution was
disheartening
3. In my opinion the resolution to the problem in the film was both satisfying and
disheartening. At the end of the film they showed that the first 200 hundred visas
proposed for the refugees that would be saved was added by 1,000 more, however,
at the last part of the film Manuel Quezon watched a short film together with his wife,
in which showing that Roosevelt’s administration was the one given praise instead of
Manuel Quezon’s efforts, and it was later revealed that the plan to save more Jews
from the Nazis where halted by the Japanese invasion
Throughout my life I had problems that I had to deal with, some end in a satisfying
resolution and some into a crushing choice. Most of the years in life was kept secret
by me from my family, because not only I was discreet with my parents, but I also
don’t want them to discourage me. I had this huge fight with my Mother last 2 years
ago, and I made a scene outside, and I argued about how they don’t understand me,
or even try to, I told them that I always felt like they don’t even care, and I ran from
home, to avoid thinking about suicide, and I crossed the road recklessly that day, I
ended up in the hospital because I got hit by a motorcycle, and after that incident my
mother asked me for forgiveness, while my father wanted go back here in the
Philippines, I eventually realized that they cared, and we have been more open with
each other since that day.
I also made difficult decisions that would fix my problems. So my main story is I have
been playing in a band called “Beautiful Addiction” for a 6 years, I learned to play the
drums better as the time passed playing music with them, However, our band
became toxic through the years, we would fought and argued a lot, and there are
times that we barely talk to each other at all. Honestly, it was because of them why
my passion for playing music died out until this day, because they we’re so toxic and
so painful to deal with that I gradually hated playing music. So last year, I’ve chosen
to leave the band after a fight, because I knew to myself this is unhealthy, and won’t
bring me any good. So I left, it crushed me to see that all years I’ve invested in that
band was wasted, but it was the only solution I saw that could me bring my love for
playing back, and it was the only thing that could me off the toxicity and pain.
