Comparing
yourself to
Others
Let's discuss!
Do you compare yourself
to others frequently?

Have you ever questioned your life

decision just because you saw others
seem like they're having a better life than
you on their social media?
Have you ever overspent to keep up with
others' lifestyles?
Have you ever joined something you
didn't enjoy just because of peer
pressure?
You're not alone!
I went to this webinar with 3 speakers on top of
their career; one a CEO of a unicorn startup in
Indonesia, one a VP of a multinational corporation,
and one a popular activist working in the
government. While I was expecting success stories,
they told something even better; how they're just
like us, comparing themselves to others.

There's a famous Indonesian proverb, "Selalu ada

langit di atas langit" or if translated becomes
"Above a sky, there's always another sky". In any
point in your life, there will always be someone who
you think is doing better than you.
Turn comparison
into motivation
It's always a choice on how to handle comparison.
We can feel better about comparison if we're able
to turn them into motivation.

Remember this whenever you start to compare

yourself to others :
Practice internal & external self-awareness
Don't dwell on the negatives
Think of your personal goals and compare
yourself to the past
Practice Self-awareness

Dr. Tasha Eurich, in her TEDx Talk about Self-

awareness, mentioned the four self-awareness
archetypes. Internal self-awareness represents
how clearly we see our values, passions, impact on
others. External self-awareness means
understanding how people view us.

Archetypes

Can you identify which archetype do you belong to?

How to practice Self-
awareness

Asking "why" is frequently the right thing to do whenever

we're seeking for root causes. However, in self-reflecting,
asking "what" pushes us to be more solution-oriented.

So, instead of asking ,

"Why do I have fewer achievements than them?"
try asking,
"What do I need to do to move forward and
achieve things that align with my definition of
success?"

This help us to stop dwelling on the negatives and turn them

into motivation instead.

Let's go into more details

Additional Tips

Don't dwell on the negatives

Other than practicing self-awareness, here's a tip
that you can do: whenever you say 1 critic about
yourself, follow up with 5 compliments/gratitude to
yourself.

Compare to yourself in the past

There's a saying that goes, "compare yourself to
who you were yesterday, not to who someone else
is today". It's because you never know how
someone else's journey is like. Be kind to yourself
and acknowledge your progress, no matter how
small they are!
Hope these tips help you!
