Read the PPT on Citizenship and answer the following:

1. Why is there a need to citizenship training and education?’
Citizenship training and education endows the populace with the necessary values to
strengthen their character, and rectify their beliefs. It gives people the knowledge and skills
to understand, challenge and engage with democratic society including politics, the media, civil
society, the economy and the law.It helps them to develop self-confidence and a sense of
agency, and successfully deal with life changes and challenges such as bullying and
discrimination. The youth will be inculcated with patriotism and nationalism, and courage to be
involved in public and civic affairs”.

Furthermore, this training and education will encourage all educational institutions to promote
patriotism and nationalism, foster love of humanity, respect for human rights, teach the rights
and duties of citizenship, strengthen ethical and spiritual values, develop moral character and
personal discipline.Additionally, with the integration of citizenship training and education, the
state will recognize the vital role of the youth in the nation-building and shall promote and
protect their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual and social well-being.

2.What is voluntarism?

By just looking at the term, one could already assume the root word “volunteer” which
essentially means doing/participating to something out of pure intent and will.
Voluntarism, sometimes referred to as voluntary action, is the principle that individuals
are free to choose goals and how to achieve them within the bounds of certain societal
and cultural constraints, as opposed to actions that are forced or predetermined.
Furthermore, this term also refers to an act involving a wide range of activities
encompassing traditional forms of mutual aid. This developmental interventions that
provides an enabling and empowering environment both on the part of the beneficiary
receiving, and the volunteer rendering the act.

3.How do we promote volunteerism?

Primarily, to instigate volunteerism, one has to consider the common goals. The chances
are, the potential volunteers will choose to contribute for a number of reasons; to give
something back to the community, to meet new people, or to give them something to do.
It’d would be conducive to sit down with them and work out what role is going to provide
the most value for their own reasons for volunteering, as well as what is going to be
beneficial for your charity.

Second, establish good communication. Regular meetings are vital as they will give your
volunteers a sense of direction, especially at the beginning of their service. Make sure
you give volunteers a chance to have their say and provide support and supervision
when it's a new area of responsibility for them.

Lastly, have an open door policy. Try to be accessible and approachable; volunteers should feel
comfortable coming to you for advice and if they have any questions or concerns. In addition,
you should attempt to "check-in" with them from time to time.

4.Explain this statement.

“ Your rights ends where my rights begin”

The statement implies that the rights of someone may not always be congruous to those of
others. Our rights have their limitations. In a society — wherever people live together — the
rights of individuals are unavoidably going to come into conflict, and there must be some means
for resolving those conflicts.

However, this statement is often used as an excuse or justification for people who claim that
there are no limitations on “my rights”. That all their actions, stemmed from their rights, will
always be valid, correct, and universal regardless the opinion of others.

This statement is a wrong notion in a society based on the rule of law.
