SCIENCE FUSION
GRADE 4

:
Dear student,
Make sure you study and comprehend the content of the
following slides as you will be tested on this content.
Unit-
Lesson 1- pages What Are Some Plant Structures? ( pg.103
– 108 )
Lesson 2 pages How Plants Reproduce ?
Pages 117-131 All the best,
LIFE CYCLE OF FLOWERING PLANTS .

• The bright colors help to attract insects like

butterflies and bees.
• Apparently, butterflies are not the only ones
attracted to the flowers.
• Bees like the colorful flowers, too.
• Butterflies and bees help to carry pollen from
plant to plant.
LIFE CYCLE OF FLOWERING PLANTS .

§ In order to germinate , seeds need

water ,oxygen and the right
temperature.
§ Flowering plants have different stages in
their life cycles, too.
§ The major stages are germination,
maturation, flowering, and seed
production
PARTS OF A FLOWERING PLANT
LIFE CYCLE OF FLOWERING PLANTS .

• Seed plants also have a life cycle that includes

germination, maturity, and reproduction.
• Planted seeds can grow into pine trees.
• Under the right conditions, these seeds will grow
into large evergreen trees.
• The seed sprouts and grows into a seedling.
• Over time, the seedling develops, growing branches
and leaves.

WHAT ARE SOME PLANT
STRUCTURES? ( PG.103 – 108 )
OBJECTIVES

Describe the structures of typical plants.

Describe the process of photosynthesis
WHAT ARE
SOME PLANT
STRUCTURES?
-Root system
-Stem or trunk
-Branches
-Leaves
Reproductive structures (so
metimes flowers, sometimes
cones or spores, and so on).

Engage Your Brain
How does the stem of this tree differ from
the stems of other plants?

This tree has a single woody stem. This

tree’s stem is larger than the stems of most
plants.

TYPES OF PLANTS

Most plants are vascular, which

means they have a system of
tubules inside them that carry
nutrients around the plant.
HOW DO THE SIZES OF VASCULAR AND NONVASCULAR
PLANTS COMPARE?

allow water to be carried
over a distance. The rose
plant can grow larger because
it can get water from the soil
to all parts of the plant.

ROOTS AND TAPROOTS
BOTH TYPES OF ROOTS ANCHOR A PLANT IN THE
GROUND AND ABSORB WATER AND MINERALS FROM
SOIL.

LEAVES
Are plant parts that use sunlight to produce sugar for
the plant’s food. While leaves may have the same
function, leaves come in many shapes and sizes. Only
vascular plants have true leaves.
VEINS
Why are veins important to a plant?
Veins carry water and nutrients from one part of the plant to another.
Veins also fill with water and help support leaves.
PLANTS
MAKE
FOOD
Photosynthesis: Are plants that use energy from the sun
to change carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen.
Photosynthesis takes place in the leaves of plants.
CHLOROPHYLL
CAPTURES ENERGY FROM THE SUN DURING THE
DAY. CHLOROPHYLL IS WHAT MAKES LEAVES
APPEAR GREEN IN COLOR. IT ALSO HELPS PLANTS
MAKE SUGARS, WHICH THE PLANTS STORE IN
THEIR STEMS, ROOTS, AND IN SOME PLANTS, IN
THEIR LEAVES.
WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU
REMOVED ALL THE LEAVES
FROM A PLANT?

The plant would die, because it could not make

enough food for energy through photosynthesis.
Other green leaf parts also contain chlorophyll but
not enough to keep the plant alive.
