Lesson

1 MUSIC OF CORDILLERA

In this module, you will learn about the musical style, elements, and
characteristics of the music of Cordillera. This will also make you appreciate the
humble beginning of music in the highland parts of the Philippines and how it
affects the lives of the Cordillera inhabitants. It will help you as well to
understand concepts and processes in music and arts through appreciation of
Filipino cultural identity, diversity, and expansion of one’s world vision.

Introductory Message
Modules are self-contained and independent learning package of learning
instruction aligned to the learning competencies of the K-12 Curriculum and
objectives. These are designed to facilitate learning through the creative,
substantial, and sequential development of activities considering the students to
independently manage his own learnings. Varied activities are provided to challenge
student to interact actively towards independent and self-guided learning
experiences.

For the facilitator:

This module adheres to the learning competencies of the K-12 Curriculum.


This module helps the learners understand music of the Cordillera as one of the
music from highlands of Luzon. This module is a useful learning material that
provides the learning objectives, pretest, lesson proper, enrichment activities,
generalization, application, assessment and additional activities.

For the learner:

This module is created to give meaningful learning in music of the


Cordillera through clear and comprehensive discussions. Through the lesson,
you will learn what is the elements, style, as well as the characteristics of the
music of the Cordillera and all applied expressions and principles resulting to a
good performance.

What I Need to Know
This module was designed to help you understand music from the
highlands of Luzon specifically music from Cordillera. This module provides
discussions and activities that will help you learn the characteristics,
elements and styles applied in music performances.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

 identify the musical characteristics of representative selections


of Cordillera;
 determine the characteristics of the Music of the Cordillera,
Vocal Music, and Instrumental Music;
 distinguish the contribution of the Music of Cordillera in the
development of Filipino Music through an essay writing.

Gangsa Toppaya
In "toppaya" style, the musicians play the surface of the
gangsa with their hand while in a sitting position, with a
single gangsa resting on the lap of each musician.

Bungkaka

A bungkaka, also known as the bamboo buzzer is a


percussion instrument made from bamboo common in
numerous indigenous tribes around the Philippines such as
the Ifugao, Kalinga, and Ibaloi. The instrument is
constructed from a length of buho (bamboo) with a node at
the bottom end.

Tonggali
The tongali is a four holed nose flute (one hole in the back)
from northern Philippines and played by the Kalinga and
other peoples of Luzon. The tongali is one of the few nose
flutes in the world that is still actively taught.

Tongatong

A tongatong is a percussion instrument made of various lengths of


bamboo, which is found in the Kalinga province of the Philippines. It is
played by hitting it against the earth. Traditionally, tongatongs are used
by the people of Kalinga to communicate with spirits, particularly as part
of healing rituals

Gangsa Palook

In the "palook" style, a gangsa is suspended from the musician's left hand and
played with a padded stick held in the musician's right hand.
