INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC:
44 Rondalla, Tultogan, Binanog

The Rondalla, Tultogan and Binanog are the different ensembles of the
Visayas, with their respective sound reflects not only the enthusiastic musical
involvement of the Visayan people but also their sentiments, way of life, and
interactions with their environment and other people.

Introductory Message

A module is a type of learning resource that is essentially self-contained,


self- instructional package with learning paced by the student according to his or
her individual needs and ability (Ali, et.al,2010). It requires the learners to interact
actively with the instructional materials rather than simply allowing them to read
the materials passively (Dick and Carrey, 1990).

This module adheres to the learning competencies of the K-12 Curriculum.


This module helps the learners know the different ensembles with their respective
sound reflects not only the enthusiastic musical involvement of the Visayan people
but also their sentiments, way of life, and interactions with their environment and
other people. This module is a useful learning material that provides the learning
objectives, pretest, lesson proper, enrichment activities, generalization, application,
assessment and additional activities.

For the learner:

This module is created to give meaningful learning of the Instrumental Music


through clear and comprehensive discussions. Through the lesson, you will know
different ensembles with their respective sound reflects not only the enthusiastic
musical involvement of the Visayan people but also their sentiments, way of life,
and interactions with their environment and other people.

 identify the musical instruments and other sound sources from the Visayas.
 improvise simple rhythmic/melodic accompaniments to selected music from
Visayas.

What is It

The Visayan music is highly Spanish influenced because they colonized the
Philippines for a long time. Spaniards musicians introduced new styles of music,
which has also Western musical traditions. The different ensembles, with their
respective sound reflects not only the enthusiastic musical involvement of the
Visayan people but also their sentiments, way of life, and interactions with their
environment and other people.

In this activity, you will watch a video clip of the different ensembles. You
must be familiar with the different instruments in each ensemble and how the
sound is produced.

MUSIC OF THE VISAYAS


INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC: RONDALLA, TULROGAN,
BINANOG

Rondalla is a string ensemble which


originated in Spain. It comprises mostly of stringed
instruments played with a plectrum or pick.
Several percussion instruments are optionally
added to match a particular music or piece. The
Philippine Rondalla is truly a big step in the
understanding of our culture and musical heritage.
It has a wide repertoire that features folk, classical,
pop, harana, march, lullaby, balitaw, and
contemporary Filipino music.

Tultogan is a bamboo and drum ensemble.
Tultogan comes from the root word “tultog”, an action
verbalizing the act of playing sound on bamboo. To
produce sound, the body of the bamboo is struck with
sticks. Long time ago, the bamboos were used by the
natives for communication.

Binanog is a gong, drum, wooden percussion


ensemble. It is used to accompany a dance movement
imitating the flight of the hawk.
